Wembanyama clears another record on the way to the definitive jazz spanking

Wembanyama clears another record on the way to the definitive jazz spanking

Six of Spurs’ 10 wins this season have come by a margin of 10 points or more. Let that sink in for a team that only won 22 games last year. San Antonio has now won seven of their last nine games and with each win they are increasing their confidence. Confidence is dangerous in professional sports because a large part of the game is mental. All players are talented and when they believe in it, the impossible happens.

The impossible began in 210 when Victor Wembanyama was drafted number one overall last summer. Since then, he has done nothing but live up to the hype that came with his name. Most of the hype surrounding an up-and-coming candidate was his, and more than a year later he has broken one record after another. Today’s 128-115 win over the Utah Jazz was no exception.

He’s so young and throws so many punches that it’ll be a Wilt Chamberlain-esque record lover who can hardly imagine anyone else hitting him when he’s done with it.

Anyone who still complains about Wembanyama’s shot selection is just being stubborn. Against Utah, he shot 14 3-pointers and made six of them. That’s a 43% efficiency that hundreds of players around the league would like to have. He has a 43% shooting percentage in three of his last 10 games, so this isn’t an outlier.

Mitch Johnson wasn’t lying when he told the media that the alien was a good shot. It just took a while for Wemby to shake off the rust after not playing much in the preseason and get used to the style of NBA play again.

He scored 17 points in the second quarter and finished the game with 34 points, and his defensive presence was strong. The latter is what is most expected of him, and he had three blocks. How he scores his points is less important as long as he is efficient. As long as he uses his size to stifle the other team’s offense, he should be expected to put his natural talents to good use.

Stephon Castle was the Spurs’ second-best scorer with 23 points. He added five assists and three rebounds to his night, and San Antonio needed all of it. He got the team going with two big threes early in the game and it was all races from there. The rookie has established himself as a reliable player that fans can rely on to make plays, and he has done so in spades.

Julian Champagnie had three steals and shot 4/9 from three. Spurs don’t win without his contribution. It was one of Champagnie’s best games of the season.

Blake Wesley had some of the biggest ups and downs of any player on the team, but against Utah he was way up there. Wesley scored 11 points on 4/5 shooting, assisted on four shots and had two steals in nearly 22 minutes.

San Antonio continues to show the league that the Spurs culture is alive and well in the Alamo City. They must deal with threats from multiple positions while figuring out how to stop an alien who has every basketball skill known to man.
