Lukasz Fabianski was stretchered off the bed after seven minutes of medical treatment in the first half of West Ham’s game against Southampton.

Fabianski was left in a bad state after colliding with the elbow of Saints defender Nathan Wood, who received a yellow card for his involvement.

Paramedics quickly rushed onto the field while Fabianski lay on the grass. He was treated for around seven minutes, with Ramsdale running over to his fellow goalkeeper to check on him with a smart touch.

It quickly became apparent that Fabianski could not continue and had to be sent off, with Alphonse Areola coming on to replace him. All four corners of St Mary’s Stadium stood to applaud the Hammers goalkeeper as he left the pitch.

Amazon Prime did not show replays of the collision and kept cameras away from Fabianski while he was treated. He was covered with a blanket, fitted with a neck brace and given oxygen before being taken down.

Some positive news filtered through at half-time when Amazon Prime reported that Fabianski did not go to hospital but was being monitored on the ground. He later returned to sit in the West Ham dugout during the closing stages of the game.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper was playing a brilliant game at the time of his injury, saving three important balls, including a sensational close-range stop from Paul Onuachu.

He has emerged as West Ham’s first-choice goalkeeper in recent months after replacing Areola as the preferred option between the posts. It remains to be seen whether he will be sidelined for a long period of time following his injury against Southampton.

Fabianski’s early withdrawal came just minutes after the Hammers lost Max Kilman to an apparent shoulder injury. The defender was visibly uncomfortable before being substituted and replaced by Jean-Clair Todibo.

There were no goals in the first half, with Onuachu wasting three good chances to give Southampton an early lead. West Ham went into the game on a three-game unbeaten run but only managed a single shot on target before half-time.

They broke the deadlock after the break when Jarrod Bowen found the net from close range after Southampton failed to clear their lines.
