What AJ Brown wants, AJ Brown gets in the Eagles’ 27-13 win over the Steelers

What AJ Brown wants, AJ Brown gets in the Eagles’ 27-13 win over the Steelers

Maybe AJ Brown will be next to call for world peace, an end to hunger and the lifting of the global alert.

It worked last time.

Brown complained last week that passing was the Eagles’ biggest problem; This after they won their ninth game in a row. The Birds had just moved to 11-2, fueled by Saquon Barkley’s MVP run, but Brown was on pace in the worst of his three seasons as an Eagle and the Eagles were second-to-last in the passing game, and for Brown, that wouldn’t happen stand.

It didn’t do that either.

After spending a week dealing with the fallout from receivers complaining about the passing game, the Eagles – the No. 1 rushing attacker in the NFL – called either on five of their first six offensive plays on Sunday against the Steelers to pass plays or audibly encouraged them. The second went to Brown.

Just 18 minutes into the game, Brown had five catches for 65 yards and a touchdown. With more than nine minutes to play, Brown had caught his seventh pass, a season high. He finished the game with eight catches for 110 yards, his fifth 100-yard game of the season and his highest total since Game 5, but left the game with just over three minutes to play with an apparent left leg injury.

Hurts averaged 21.4 attempts per game during the winning streak. He had put that behind him before the fourth quarter. He finished the game 25:32. It was his first game with 30 attempts since Game 5. He had 290 passing yards, his second-highest total of the season.

DeVonta Smith caught a career-best 11 passes for a season-high 109 yards and a touchdown. Smith also expressed concerns about the Eagles’ offense last week, but was far more diplomatic than Brown. As usual.

It’s just who they are. AJ can’t help it. Besides, he was right. Hurts had been gun-shy, indecisive and vague, and if the Eagles hoped to win the NFC East and make the playoffs, Hurts had to play better.

AJ asked.

AJ received.

AJ danced.

After a 5-yard touchdown pass made it 10-3, Brown and Hurts performed a shortened version of a dance made famous by Kid ‘n Play in the ’80s.

It was the latest in a series of gestures and messages from the Eagles to emphasize that Brown and Hurts had gone from enemies to friends.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni cited this as evidence: They had lunch together. Because as former middle school students, we all know how important it is to monitor who is at the lunch table.

” READ MORE: AJ Brown may be a diva, but he spoke the truth about the Eagles. So did Brandon Graham and Jalen Hurts.

At practice Friday, Sirianni referenced the 1980s hit “My Prerogative” as if to say that what happens to the Eagles only affects the Eagles. An indirect allusion, but still.

After Sunday’s win, they played it again.

There was more.

Guess who happened to be on the Eagles game program on Sunday? A note: his initials are Arthur Juan.

The Fox broadcast made sure to capture Hurt’s pregame address on the sideline in a three-way hug with Brown and DeVonta Smith.

The official Twitter/

Was it ever about anyone else? Always?

There is a precedent.

This was the third straight season that Brown either voiced and/or voiced his displeasure with the offense and its usage rate. After the 2022 season, he threw a mini-tantrum on the sidelines during a playoff win. In 2023, he boycotted the media because he was so upset about the direction of the offense. Then, last week, he tore up the passing game and the passer.

Message received.

To be fair, even without Brown’s complaint, the Eagles probably would have blown the air more than usual. The Steelers had the No. 4 run defense and a mediocre pass defense. They limited Barkley to 65 rushing yards, well below his 124.8 average. Meanwhile, third-down back Kenneth Gainwell gained 60 yards from scrimmage, his second-best total of the season.

There were other storylines. The Birds defeated a solid Steelers team 10-3. The Lions lost 12-2, the same record as the Eagles, although the Lions currently hold the top spot in the tiebreaker. The Eagles’ top-notch defense was amazing once again.

None of this garnered as much attention as The AJ Brown Show.

It was worth the price of admission.
