What are the longest college football games of all time?

Nothing beats a college football game day in the fall. But is it possible to have too much of a good thing? Some teams tested this theory by playing in longer games that lasted all night (and even into the next morning).

Here’s a look at the longest college football games since the NCAA implemented overtime in 1996./p>

Oct. 23, 2021: Illinois 20, Penn State 18 (9 OT)

Illinois and Penn State were tied 10-10 at the end of regulation time. Struggling Illini quarterback Brandon Peters connected with wide receiver Casey Washington in the end zone, scoring a crucial 2-point turnover at No. 7 Penn State and ending the NCAA’s first nine-overtime game./p>

Georgia Tech took a 17-0 first-half lead against No. 7 Georgia in the in-state rivalry game known as “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate.” But the Bulldogs stormed back in the second half, tying the score on a touchdown catch by Dominic Lovett with 1:01 left in regulation. After exchanging touchdowns in the first two overtimes, the teams failed to score in four of the next five overtime periods. In OT #8, Nate Frazier finally finished things off with an outstanding score.

September 10, 2022: Eastern Kentucky 59, Bowling Green 57 (7 OT)

Tied 38 points at the end of the fourth quarter, FCS Eastern Kentucky and FBS Bowling Green needed seven overtimes to find a winner. Eastern Kentucky quarterback Parker McKinney scored the game-winning 2-pointer with Braedon Sloan to give the Colonels a surprising 59-57 win on the road.

November 24, 2018: Texas A&M 74, LSU 72 (7 OT)

Host Texas A&M tied No. 7 LSU at 72-72 on a 17-yard touchdown run by Kellon Mond to Quartney Davis. After a penalty for each team, Mond was able to beat receiver Kendrick Rogers for a 2-pointer to win just the fifth game in FBS history to end in seven overtimes. The marathon matchup also set a record for the highest scoring game in FBS history.

Oct. 7, 2017: Western Michigan 71, Buffalo 68 (7 OT)

With 34 seconds left in regulation, Buffalo’s Adam Mitcheson hit a 34-yard field goal to tie Mid-American Conference opponent Western Michigan 31-31. The Broncos set up a 52-yard field goal attempt to take the lead, but it was blocked and the game went into overtime. Seven overtimes later, Jarvion Franklin ran in from 12 yards out to give Western Michigan a 71-68 win.

Oct. 7, 2006: North Texas 25, FIU 22 (7 OT)

North Texas entered that day as the only FBS team that had not played an overtime game since the NCAA implemented an overtime rule in 1996. The Mean Green led 5-0 at halftime before playing Florida International to a 22-22 tie at the end of the fourth quarter. Neither team could score in overtime until Denis Hopovac hit a 34-yard field goal, his fifth of the night in nine attempts.

November 1, 2003: Arkansas 71, Kentucky 63 (7OT)

Kentucky hosted Arkansas in a game that began November 1st and ended November 2nd. The first half featured a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown by both teams before the Wildcats and Razorbacks played to a 24-24 tie at the end of regulation. The two SEC rivals combined for 86 points in seven overtimes, including DeCori Birmingham’s game-winning 25-yard rushing touchdown. The game lasted 4 hours and 56 minutes.

November 3, 2001: Arkansas 58, Ole Miss 56 (7OT)

The Razorbacks played the first of two seven-overtime games in their history, this one against SEC opponent Ole Miss. Led by Eli Manning, the Rebels got within 58-56 after a touchdown from Manning to Jason Armstead. The Arkansas defense ultimately stopped Ole Miss’ 2-point conversion attempt just short of the goal line, securing another road win for the Razorbacks.
