What Gonzaga’s players said after Bucknell’s win

Led by Graham Ike’s 25 points, the Gonzaga men’s basketball team got the decision it needed with an 86-65 win over Bucknell at the McCarthey Athletic Center on Saturday night.

Ike energized the Bulldogs (9-3) from the opening tip, scoring the first nine points to help his team take an early lead. The Bison (4-8) stayed within striking distance behind 7-footer Noah Williamson, who scored nine of his team’s first 12 points. The battle of the big boys lasted the entire first half before both sides came under fire from beyond the arc in the second half.

Bucknell had reduced its deficit to 13 points after back-to-back three-pointers when Nolan Hickman answered a shot from the post by Braden Huff moments later. That set off a barrage over the next two minutes as the Zags and Bison combined for six 3-pointers in a back-and-forth game.

Hickman knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. Gonzaga went 12:35 from downtown on the night and forced 19 turnovers, which led to 24 points in the opposite direction.

Here’s more from Ike and Hickman after the game.

Ike on what worked for him against the Bison:

“Really simple, but just being energetic, man, whenever I got the ball, even when I didn’t get the ball, just being energetic and assertive. That was the most important thing for me this week, actually all year. So.” That means I’ll just keep going.

Hickman on Gonzaga forcing 19 turnovers against Bucknell:

“We just make plays on defense. The coaches have been preaching this again and again over the last few weeks. They just make sure we get stops and defend the ball. We just make plays with the ball on defense.”

I like what he took away from the Kentucky and UConn games for the future:

“Really just on offense, I take what the defense gives me and then just be vigilant on defense, try to stay a step ahead, try to transfer my film work to the live game just so I can do that well “I’m as prepared as possible.” It’s all about the preparation (before the game) and then we just have to get on with the execution.

Hickman on the upcoming matchup with UCLA:

“It’s always a rumble, man. It’s always a good time to play UCLA…all my guys look forward to it. This Christmas break will be good to recharge your batteries, clear your head and get started again. And this.” In my opinion it is the perfect game to return to. So we’re ready.”
