What happened after the Buckeyes lost to the Wolverines?

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Michigan players raised their team flag at midfield at Ohio Stadium Saturday afternoon after a 13-10 win over No. 2 Ohio State, which led to a brawl between players from both teams, with police attempting to stop the Separate teams and use pepper spray.

According to videos captured of the incident, including by NBC4, Michigan players gathered at midfield as time expired. With the encouragement of their teammates, offensive lineman Raheem Anderson and running back Terrence Dunlap raised the flag and were immediately greeted by Ohio State players, who joined the band for the traditional singing of Carmen Ohio after every home game.

Players and others began scuffling, with police attempting to separate the sides. A fight for control of the flag began when Ohio State defender Jack Sawyer ripped it from the pole and threw it onto the field. Cornerback Davison Igbinosun collected it and tried to get away with it before a person in Michigan gear went to take it back, leading to more scuffles.

Television footage showed Michigan players Tavierre Dunlap and Jason Hewlett wiping their eyes because they appeared to have been hit by pepper spray, and at least one person on the NBC4 sideline was also affected.

In his postgame press conference, Ohio State coach Ryan Day gave few details and did not immediately know if any players were injured.

“I know these guys wanted to raise a flag on the field and our guys weren’t going to let that happen,” Day said.

Athletic director Ross Bjork declined to comment on the incident, and neither the university nor the Big Ten immediately issued statements.

The victory was Michigan’s fourth straight in the series, with Ohio State’s last victory coming in 2019. The Buckeyes fell to 10-2 and were eliminated from contention for a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game. They continue to be a strong contender for a spot in the College Football Playoff, which expanded to 12 teams in its first year.

Ohio State’s next game is expected to be Dec. 20 or 21 in the first round of the playoffs. Michigan improves to 7-5 and will next play in a non-playoff bowl game.
