What Happened in the 'Blue Bloods' Finale: Tom Selleck's Last Words

“Blue Bloods” ended Friday after 14 seasons with a tragic death, a shooting that killed the mayor, a pregnancy, a new couple and a secret marriage.

But of course, after the latest arrests, the popular CBS police procedural could only end one way – with the traditional Sunday family dinner in the dining room of patriarch Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck), the New York Police Commissioner. The family dinner concluded each of the 288 episodes.

Creator and executive producer Leonard Goldberg came up with the concept for the episode’s ending, which lured “Magnum PI” star Selleck to join the cast of the police procedural, which premiered in 2010. Knowing the law enforcement family reunions would resonate, Selleck, 79, fought to keep the show’s ending alive.

“That meal at the end of the episode and Leonard’s gift in the casting are probably why we’re still here,” Selleck told USA TODAY in February.

Widower Frank sits at the head of the table for the last time in Sunday’s episode, which is dedicated to “Charlie’s Angels” producer Goldberg, who died in 2019. There are jokes about the need for a larger table as the Reagan family has grown in every way. But there are still the loyalists: Frank’s father and former New York Police Commissioner Henry (Len Cariou), Detective Danny (Donnie Wahlberg), Assistant District Attorney Erin (Bridget Moynahan) and Detective Jamie (Will Estes).

Selleck criticized CBS’ decision to cancel “Blue Bloods” and called for more episodes. But his character’s final feelings reflect the deeper feelings of an impressive 14-year series.

“I’m looking around this table,” Frank says. “I couldn’t be prouder…or more grateful.”

Who got married? Who is having a Reagan baby?

Officer Edit “Eddie” Janko-Reagan (Vanessa Ray) is devastated when her partner, Officer Luis Badillo (Ian Quinlan), is shot. This is a shooting spree in which Mayor Peter Chase (Dylan Walsh) is seriously injured. Gathered police officers in dress uniform greet Luis at the final, bagpipe-filled funeral of the series.

Eddie overcomes her grief and sweetly announces that she is pregnant by bringing her high chair into the Reagan dining room and placing it next to her beaming husband, Jamie.

The happy news stops Erin from making her big announcement: she and her ex-husband Jack Boyle (Peter Hermann) are giving marriage another chance. Erin had suggested the idea to Jack while drinking coffee during a workday walk. “Everyone deserves a second chance, right? This time everything would be different,” she says.

The reformed couple dramatically smooch in the sunlight and agree to get married again at the town hall and tell everyone “after the fact.” But at the dinner table, Erin doesn’t want to hide Eddie and Jamie’s pregnancy news. Instead of revealing their reunion, Erin hastily announces that prosecutors will be filing first-degree murder charges against Luis’ killer. Jack, who has never lost his place at the table next to his ex, smiles knowingly at Erin: her good news will have to wait.

The partners Danny and Maria finally want a piece of love

At the Reagan dinners, Danny has two adult children from his late wife Linda (Amy Carlson), but no partner. The widower gets a touching push from his grandfather Henry to find someone to come home to. Danny asks his detective partner Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) for pizza.

As she takes Danny by the arm, Maria’s smiling acceptance promises a beautiful future together. But it’s still too early to secure Maria a place at the graduation dinner.

Tom Selleck and Edward James Olmos are neck and neck

Selleck has another opportunity to showcase his tough but humane Blue Bloods persona in a tense prison scene. Frank must persuade prisoner Lorenzo Batista (Edward James Olmos) to reveal the whereabouts of his son, who is suspected of a shooting. Frank, being operatically angry, won’t screw over his own child. But Frank convinces him effectively.

With Lorenzo’s cooperation, Frank is able to tell the mayor, who is recovering in a hospital, that his shooter has been arrested. Frank places the fatal bullet that missed the mayor on a bedside table to show how close he came to a tragic death.

And “Blue Bloods” is history.
