What happened in the series finale?

Patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner) received the touching funeral he deserved in Sunday’s season five finale of “Yellowstone.” Montana’s defiant former governor can rest in peace in his polished wooden coffin because the ranch he fought to preserve will remain untouched and never be converted into a dreaded real estate development.

In the apparent finale of the “Yellowstone” series, there were plenty of cowboy farewells as the Yellowstone Ranch is sold to the original Native Americans who owned it generations ago.

But no farewell is as dramatic as the violent death of Attorney General Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), who ultimately receives harsh justice for his role in his father’s death in a way that is surprising only for its brutality.

It might not be the end yet: Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) and John’s daughter Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) will reportedly star in their own spin-off series. But just like that, the Paramount Network OG series said goodbye.

John Dutton was buried with his ancestors at Yellowstone Ranch

The final six episodes began with the murder of John Dutton by professional hitmen and the examination of his body on a morgue table after Costner left the series following a protracted dispute with creator and executive producer Taylor Sheridan. But this small funeral is perfect for “Yellowstone”: only his family, the sleeping hut crew and two close friends attend. Jamie isn’t invited and has no idea what’s going on.

Rip and company even dig John’s grave on the property, surrounded by generations of Duttons and next to John’s wife. As a final farewell, each participant places a white rose on the coffin. Beth, planning her final move, leans close to her beloved father’s coffin and vows in a whisper, “I will avenge you,” before staggering away.

Rip gets the best funeral lines, dismissing the preacher by saying, “I think we almost prayed. If he’s not in heaven, then he’s not going. Or there isn’t one.”

Beth kills her brother Jamie after their father’s funeral

Jamie seems to be in the clear after giving the speech of his life to reassure the public that he will find the governor’s killer and that he has absolutely nothing to do with the murdered lawyer Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri). who had hired contract killers. Claiming he had something to do with Atwood (his secret girlfriend) would be the real crime.

But Jamie can’t even pour a victory drink at home because Beth is waiting for her with a surprise made of tire iron. She lashes out and covers his face with bear spray. It’s a fierce battle: Jamie regains the combat advantage and foolishly lets it go in typical villain style.

Just before Jamie can kill Beth, Rip storms in and opens a big old can containing Jamie’s contents. But Beth demands the final honor of killing her long-time archenemy: she stabs her brother in the chest.

“Look at me,” damned Beth says to the dying Jamie. “I’m the last thing you’ll ever see.”

The dead Jamie is deposited in the family’s secret “train station”, where generations of Dutton enemies have been thrown into eternity. Rip soaks Jamie’s car in gasoline and throws a match into it. It’s perfect “Yellowstone” revenge as Beth convincingly tells the police that Jamie beat her and fled after she confronted her brother about his role in their father’s death.

The police will be looking for Jamie for a long time. But both Jamie and Atwood’s company, Market Equities, will face doom in everything.

Kayce sells the Yellowstone Ranch for $1.25 an acre and Elsa Dutton rises from the dead to declare victory

It was Kayce who cryptically suggested the Yellowstone sale at the end of last week’s episode, and stubborn financial whiz Beth was keen on the idea. In Sunday’s episode, Kayce sells the largest ranch in Montana to Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), chairman of the Confederated Tribes of Broken Rock and leader of the Broken Rock Reservation.

So the land will return to the Indian tribe from whom the Dutton family took it generations ago. In another ironic twist, Kayce sells it for the ridiculously low price of $1.25 per acre, the original price his ancestors paid. Kayce and his family take a small piece of land to live in peace (and keep them out of the spin-off).

Rainwater promises that the land will never be developed and that the Dutton family buried there will be protected. “Your people are buried on this land, and mine too. It is sacred and that is how we will treat it.” Rainwater says. “Then your family will have a forever home here.”

Stormwater turns the land into a wilderness area where nothing can be built and no motorized vehicles are allowed. Dutton’s ancestors are happy with the decision. Elsa Dutton (Isabel May), the doomed narrator of the “Yellowstone” prequel series “1883,” brings a surprising voice back to bless the decision. “Land can’t really be owned by people,” she says, pointing out that the Duttons were merely stewards.

Where do Rip and Beth end up in “Yellowstone”?

Beth recovers from her injuries and meets Rip, who is working on her new ranch in Texas. After her father’s death is avenged, Beth suggests that the two of them go to town, where there is a great new bar where there are no longer any dreaded tourists.
