What is a fair catch free kick field goal in the NFL?

Fans of obscure NFL rules had their best moment in the sun during the Los Angeles Chargers-Denver Broncos game on Thursday Night Football on Dec. 19.

Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker hit a 57-yard field goal with no time left in the first half in his team’s 34-27 win. However, it’s the way the kick came about that has people up in arms.

Dicker’s field goal was actually a fair catch field goal, the first of its kind in an NFL game in nearly half a century. The kick came after the Broncos punted the ball at the end of the first half and were penalized for fair catch interference, giving the Chargers an additional 15 yards. This is where the fair catch free kick rule came into play.

What is the NFL’s fair catch free kick rule?

The rule in question is not well known in this situation and is not applied as time had expired in the first half.

The NFL explained the rule and what was allowed to happen because of the Broncos penalty.

“If the player makes a fair catch, the attacking team may elect to extend the period through a fair catch kick, but does not have the option to extend the period through a snap from scrimmage,” it says Rule.

“If the kicking team interferes with a receiver who has signaled a fair catch, the receiving team has the option to extend the time period by attempting a fair catch kick or by taking a snap after all applicable penalties have been completed the scrimmage.”

Due to the rule, Dicker kicked the ball from the catch point while the defense could not be at the line of scrimmage, unlike a typical field goal.

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh was all in.

“That’s my favorite rule in football,” he said after the game. “I’m just trying to get one of those every game.”

The 57-yard field goal, which Harbaugh said “gave the momentum back” to his team, was the longest fair-catch field goal in NFL history and the first successful one of its kind since Ray scored, according to NFL.com Wersching played for the then San Diego Chargers on November 21, 1976.

Dicker himself was amazed at what was happening.

“I kind of laughed,” he told reporters about what he was thinking while he was on the field, according to a video posted by NFL Network’s Bridget Condon. “I thought, ‘What a funny moment. That’s cool. Just enjoy the moment, embrace the moment. Just try to bomb and enjoy it.’”

Dicker’s kick brought the Chargers within eight points at halftime, with the Broncos holding a 21-13 lead. The Chargers outscored the game 21-6 in the second half to win the game and boost their playoff hopes as both teams are 9-6 on the season.
