What is the Nintendo Switch 2 release date?

Everyone but Nintendo seems to be talking about the Switch 2. Whether it’s the tech gurus at Digital Foundry commenting on the leaked photos of the Switch 2 motherboard, rampant speculation about the upcoming console’s performance, or, you know, licensed accessory makers showing the world how the Switch is 2 looks like and when it will be released.

That’s what happened at CES this week, where accessory maker Genki is showcasing its upcoming Switch 2 accessories – and a rumored model of the Switch 2 itself. French outlet Numerama posted a video of their tour of the booth on X (formerly Twitter). :

Switch 2 release date?

According to Numerama, the Genki representative revealed a number of key information about the Switch 2, including a release date: April 2025. Nintendo has promised to discuss its next-gen console before the end of March, so this follows. It’s worth noting that two months passed between the full reveal and the final release in 2017.

The report also claims that Genki has confirmed the existence of an optical sensor, and that this adds to existing speculation that the Joy-Con could function as a mouse, like the Legion Go 2 TrueStrike controller does.

Perhaps most incredibly, the French gaming outlet claims to have spoken to numerous accessory makers, all of whom claim that the real, definitive Switch 2 is available on the black market “as long as you invest the money.”

Genki claims that all of its cases, grips and other Switch 2 accessories are made from molds of the real console and not CAD designs.

Detailed Switch 2 animation

However, Genki does more than just leak release dates. A detailed animation has been created showing what the Switch 2 looks like and how its accessories interact with it. Here it is live on his website and a standalone video below:

Genki obviously has some Switch accessories ready for launch, which adds some legitimacy to the whole thing. As we can see in the video above, the new Joy-Cons are magnetically attached and feature a release button near the triggers. (The alleged stand also looks much more durable than the current one).

The rumor about magnetically attached Joy-Cons dates back to September 2024, when CAD renders and photos of the Switch 2 and its controllers were posted on Reddit. This particular leak mentioned a “magnetic slide rail” and exact dimensions of the device.

On a somewhat related note: This analysis from Digital Foundry is worth checking out (it’s timestamped to take you straight to that section). The team deftly debunks any speculation that the Switch 2 will be able to match the performance of the PS4 Pro, discussing why the processor might be made using Samsung’s 8nm process and what the implications would be, and even some educated guesses about it the battery capacity.

Of course, the only thing Nintendo has officially confirmed is that the Switch 2 will thankfully be backwards compatible with its predecessor, and that it plans to produce enough units this time around to deter scalpers.

A previous version of this article listed May 2025 as the alleged Switch 2 release date. It has since been corrected to accurately reflect the original French report.
