Syracuse won a bowl game after its best regular season since 2018 with a 9-3 record. Syracuse, behind star quarterback and Ohio State transfer Kyle McCord, also fought its way into the top 25 after its final game of the season – a 42-38 win over the then-13th-ranked Miami Hurricanes.

Now they arrive in San Diego, where there is a run-in with a program that can only be described as chaos. Washington State had 27 players enter the transfer portal after this season, only three of whom are expected to play against Syracuse. That includes quarterback John Mateer, who reportedly received $1.5 million to transfer to Oklahoma.

The Syracuse players try not to let the chaos on the other side of the field affect their approach to the game.

“We try to treat every opponent the same,” linebacker Justin Barron said, asking if he was disappointed to face a depleted Washington State squad. “Last year we were in the opposite position. That’s what we experienced… They are still in full strength for me. I won’t treat them any differently because the boys went into the portal. The guys that were backups. “All year long, they’re probably going to play harder than they ever have.”
