Following the death of former President Jimmy Carter on December 29, President Joe Biden declared a national day of mourning in honor of the humanitarian leader on January 9, the day of Carter’s funeral in Washington, DC

The tradition, which began with a one-day government shutdown following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865, is one of many ways the United States honors its late presidents. Biden’s statement also stated that all American flags displayed at public and military sites worldwide must be flown at half-staff for 30 days following Carter’s death.
