What you should know about “Christmukkah”

Two holidays will be celebrated across the country this week as the first night of Hanukkah falls on the same day as Christmas.

The Jewish celebration of the Festival of Lights begins at sunset on Wednesday, just as Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

A “Christmukkah” as rare as this occurs because the Hebrew calendar does not agree with the Gregorian calendar, causing the start of the Hanukkah holiday to be postponed every year.

According to Hebcal, a website that tracks Jewish holidays and the Hebrew calendar, the holidays have occurred on the same day four times since 1900.

Christmukkah – sometimes spelled Chrismukkah – is a combined festival that occurs when Hanukkah is celebrated in conjunction with Christmas. On rare occasions, it also marks the first day of Hanukkah, which coincides with Christmas.
