Maj. Charity Adams (Kerry Washington) leads an all-black Army unit during World War II "The Six Triple Eight."

One of the hottest movies on Netflix this holiday season is “The Six Triple Eight,” which tells the true story of an Ohio woman who made history during World War II.

In the film, Kerry Washington plays U.S. Army Major Charity Adams Earley, a pioneering officer in the Women’s Army Corps.

The 6888th Central Mail Battalion was tasked with sorting through a three-year backlog of 17 million pieces of undelivered mail to and from soldiers and their families.

Adams Earley, who was born in 1918 and grew up in South Carolina, came to Ohio to study mathematics, Latin and physics at Wilberforce College. She returned to South Carolina to work as a teacher, but took graduate courses at Ohio State University during the summer, according to her biography published by the National Women’s History Museum.
