When are the CFP rankings released? Date, time, TV for the fifth broadcast

After a huge win over rival Washington to close out the regular season, the Oregon Ducks enter championship week likely the top-ranked team in the country. They have been at the top of the rankings since the start of the season, ever since defeating the Ohio State Buckeyes in their sixth game of the year.

That streak likely won’t end during Tuesday’s rankings show, especially after its biggest rival, Ohio State, lost to a mediocre Michigan team. However, before the Ducks can claim their rightful spot as the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff, they must defeat Penn State in the Big Ten Championship Game.

Regardless of what happens in this game, however, Tuesday’s rankings will provide a glimpse of where Oregon could fall in a worst-case scenario. Should they lose, how far could they fall? How many teams are participating in the 2024 College Football Playoff?

In the 2024-25 season, 12 teams will qualify for the College Football Playoff. Previously, only four teams received a bid for the College Football Playoff. This is the first season with the new expanded format.

How does the College Football Playoff format work?

The 12 participating teams in the College Football Playoff round are the five highest-ranked conference champions by the CFP Selection Committee, accompanied by the next highest seven teams.

The top four ranked conference champions are seeded one through four and receive a bye in the first round. The fifth conference champion will be seeded where they were ranked, or No. 12 if outside the top 12 in the CFP rankings. The highest finish a non-conference champion can achieve is No. 5, even if they finish in the top four.
