In the fourth of the six College Football Playoff rankings, it was clear that every game is crucial to teams’ chances of making the playoffs. After losing to unranked opponents, Alabama and Ole Miss fell out of the top 12 seeds for the first time. This situation presents opportunities for teams like Arizona State, currently seeded 12th, and SMU, currently seeded 10th, to move up the rankings. How many teams are participating in the 2024 College Football Playoff?

In the 2024-25 season, 12 teams will qualify for the College Football Playoff. The top five conference champions receive automatic bids. The remaining seven top-ranked teams complete the 12-team field.

How does the College Football Playoff format work?

The 12 participating teams in the College Football Playoff round are the five highest-ranked conference champions by the CFP Selection Committee and the next highest seven teams.

The top four ranked conference champions are seeded one through four and receive a bye in the first round. The fifth conference champion will be seeded where they were ranked, or No. 12 if outside the top 12 in the CFP rankings. Non-conference champions placed in the top four will be seeded starting at No. 5.
