StrangeSet in 1950, the film follows William Lee (played by Daniel Craig), an American expat in Mexico City. Lee spends his days alone, but when he meets Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), a much younger, discharged soldier, his world begins to expand.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the film is based on the semi-autobiographical novella of the same name by William S. Burroughs, written in the 1950s but not published until 1985.

“He’s searching,” Craig says of his character William Lee. “It’s clear at the beginning of the film that he’s looking for something. And he finds Allerton. And he thinks that’s it, that’s it, so he throws everything at it – probably awkwardly and embarrassing himself in the process.”

Screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes explains: “Lee is this tender, awkward guy who loves in an almost juvenile way… In a way I see it as a comedy about this person in love.” And I was shocked at how committed Daniel was to it. Sometimes I want to scream at the screen: ‘Stop pawing at Allerton, he doesn’t like this!’ You’ll make him run away!’ That was all in the script, but it feels so sharp because of the way Daniel does it.”

At tonight’s Golden Globes, Craig is nominated in the Best Actor (Drama) category for his performance as Lee. But if you want to watch Craig’s critically acclaimed performance at home, you’ll have to wait a little longer: Strange was released in limited release on November 27, 2024 and opened nationwide on December 13, 2024. Once it hits streaming, it will be available to watch on Max thanks to A24’s licensing agreement with Warner Bros.
