When will the 2025 Sugar Bowl game take place after being postponed?

Football took a backseat to tragedy on New Year’s Day after a deadly truck attack in New Orleans left 15 people dead and dozens injured.

A driver whom authorities identified as a Texas-born man and an Army veteran drove a truck with an ISIS flag into a crowd of New Year’s revelers on Bourbon Street around 3:15 a.m., killing 15 people and injuring at least 30, the police said.

The horrific attack occurred on a day when the University of Georgia and Notre Dame were scheduled to play a College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Superdome in New Orleans.

Here’s what you should know about the postponed game.

Why was the Sugar Bowl postponed?

The truck attack prompted Sugar Bowl officials to move the game from its original 8:45 p.m. ET on New Year’s Day to 4:00 p.m. ET on January 2nd.

“Of course, public safety is the number one priority at any major event in the city of New Orleans,” Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley said at a Jan. 1 media briefing, adding: “All parties agree that it is for the best “It is in everyone’s interest and public safety that we postpone the game.”

Hundley said organizers consulted with state and local authorities, ESPN, which will broadcast the game, and universities to make the decision to postpone the game.

“We live in the world of fun and games with what we do, but we fully understand the importance of it and will support it 100 percent,” Hundley said.

Democratic Congressman Troy Carter spoke of postponing the game.

“It was done with one goal: public safety – to ensure that the citizens and visitors of this great city are safe not just at this event, but at any event you come to in Louisiana,” Carter said, according to The Associated Press.

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman also supported the decision.

“I have great confidence that this country will rally around New Orleans and support all of the victims of the families affected today,” Freeman told ESPN.

What time is the Sugar Bowl and how can fans watch?

The game is now scheduled for January 2 at 4:00 p.m. ET at the 74,000-seat Superdome, home of the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. It will be broadcast live on ESPN and streamed on the ESPN app.

New Orleans officials said additional security measures were in place for the game.

“We have bomb dogs out there sweeping the Superdome and all of the outdoor area that will be closed during the game,” Anne Kirkpatrick, superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department, said at a news conference.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry said at a news conference on Jan. 1 that he would attend the game.

“I’ll tell you one thing: your governor will be there,” Landry said. “This is proof, believe me, that this facility and this city are safer today than they were yesterday.”

The winner of the Georgia-Notre Dame game advances to the CFP semifinals against Penn State, which beat Boise State 31-14 in the quarterfinals. The semifinals will take place in the Orange Bowl, scheduled to take place in Miami on January 9 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The other semi-final has already been decided. Texas plays Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl on January 10 at 7:30 p.m. ET in Arlington, Texas.
