Since it was first announced as a concept, the 12-team College Football Playoff has been an oddity. After 10 years of four-team playoffs, what might the event look like if the field triples?

This weekend, and after weeks and months of endless speculation and predictions, the playoff selection committee will announce its final rankings of the 2024 college football season, keeping the national championship dreams of 12 programs alive – while dashing the hopes of a few others, who simply miss the field.

There’s just some mystery as to who will fill some of the available spots.

After winning their conference championship games, Arizona State, Boise State, Georgia, Oregon and Clemson are virtually guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. Penn State and Ohio State appear to be locked out of the Big Ten. The same goes for Texas and Tennessee outside the SEC.

When will the College Football Playoff series be released?

The College Football Playoff roster will be announced on Sunday, December 8th at 12:00 p.m. ET.

2024 CFP rankings release schedule

Sunday December 8th: Noon ET

Sunday’s College Football Playoff rankings are the sixth and final rankings the playoff selection committee will release. The previous five rankings were released Tuesday evening, beginning Nov. 5 after Week 10 of the 2024 season.

Sunday’s rankings will be released one day after the final group of conference championship games concludes. Each of the four title games for the Power Four conferences – Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Big 12 – took place on Saturday.

What channel is the CFP Selection broadcast on Sunday?

The College Football Playoff selection show airs on ESPN starting at noon ET. The show is scheduled to last four hours and end at 4:00 p.m. ET. However, the rankings and playoff selections will be announced earlier in the broadcast window, as in previous years.
