When was the last time the Super Bowl was played in New Orleans?

Super Bowl LIX marks the 11th time the Super Bowl has been played in New Orleans since 1970. Super Bowls IV, VI and IX were played at Tulane Stadium. Since then, starting with Super Bowl XII in 1978, the Superdome has been the venue for the event.

In the last Super Bowl in New Orleans, the Baltimore Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 on February 3, 2013 in Super Bowl XLVII in what was then called the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

The game is best remembered for a 34-minute power outage in the Superdome that interrupted play and appeared to change the dynamics of the contest. The Ravens led 28-6 at the time of the loss early in the third quarter, only to see the 49ers score 17 points in four minutes to close the gap before Baltimore won the franchise’s second title.

The 73,000-seat Caesars Superdome has undergone a series of renovations costing hundreds of millions of dollars since Hurricane Katrina tore off much of the building’s roof in 2005.

In 2006, the Superdome reopened after a multi-stage renovation that cost over $200 million. The renovation included a new roof, video board, concession stands, kitchens and improved seating.

In 2020, a new $560 million round of renovations began, removing concrete ramps and replacing them with stairs and elevators. According to the New Orleans’ Saints’ website, recent updates also included Wi-Fi and cellular upgrades, three new atriums, new 40-yard line bars, and additional fan amenities and technology improvements.

The latest renovations were completed prior to the team’s season opener on August 25, 2024.
