Where was “Polar Opposites” filmed? Cast stories and filming locations

Hallmark Channel’s newest film, “Polar Opposites,” premieres Saturday, January 11 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern/7:00 p.m. Central. The main roles are played by Rhiannon Fish and Markian Tarasiuk. Read on to learn all about where the film was filmed and see some behind-the-scenes stories from the cast.


“Polar Opposites” was filmed in Argentina

According to IMDb, “Polar Opposites” was filmed on location in Patagonia and Ushuaia, Argentina. Ushuaia is popularly known as the “End of the World” (even the town sign says “fin del mundo”) and serves as the gateway city to Antarctica. According to IMDb, Ushuaia replaced Antarctica in the film. Both cities serve as a picturesque backdrop for Emma’s journey.

Actor Dean McDermott, who plays Ian in the film, posted a few updates on Instagram during filming.

On his birthday he wrote: “I am so blessed to spend my birthday in Ushuaia, Argentina!! I’m just a stone’s throw from Antarctica. I celebrate with old friends, new friends and my beautiful girlfriend. I owe it all to recovery and cleanliness and sobriety. Life is wonderful. ❤️“

Director Colin Theys also posted many pictures of these far-flung locations on Instagram.

Maeve Quinlan posted a video about her “unique experience” on Instagram.

She wrote: “Exceedingly grateful and blessed for this job and experience of a lifetime 🏔️❄️☃️🎥🎬📺🐧!” Many thanks to @hollyware_produktion, @mr_hollyware, @colintheys and @elviamega for the casting. I never want filming with you to ever end. 🤍🤗”

She also posted many behind-the-scenes pictures with the crew.

“Filming a heartwarming film in Patagonia with these incredibly talented people was everything you could imagine… and more! 🎥🎬🏔️❄️⛷️☃️🥶🧤🐧🌨️,” she wrote.

She then continued and wrote, “Thank you to our fearless leader and heart and soul @mr_hollyware, @hollyware_produktion & @elviamega, @johnnysixstrings and our beyond incredible director @colintheys for another amazing shoot and breathtaking filming experience with you.” everyone and your OUTSTANDING crew 👏 . And of course, I thank from the bottom of my heart this incredible cast that I can now call my friends: @imdeanmcdermott and @lillianlenore, @raissa.xavierr, @marktaras, @michelhersch and @rhiannonmfish. See you soon next time I pray 🙋‍♀️🤗🎥🤍”

The Hollyware Production account on Instagram posted: “Happy New Year 2025, family and friends! 🎉 We wish you all the best! And here are some memories from the year we cast the penguins in Polar Opposites 🐧♥️”

In another sweet behind-the-scenes post, they wrote, “Another day at the office…🤙🏽 Happy belated Thanksgiving family, cheers! 🧡🦃”

McDermott also posted a picture with a penguin, courtesy of Hallmark.


Meet the cast

Hallmark’s synopsis reads: “Emma must go to Antarctica to reach her father and travels to South America, but can’t board a boat for the final leg. She sneaks onto a cruise ship and meets engineer Andy.”

According to her bio, Rhiannon Fish plays the role of Emma. She began her career as Lisa Jeffries on the soap opera Neighbors and later played the role of Rocky on Disney Channel’s As the Bell Rings. You might also recognize her as Laura from Playing for Charlie. From 2010 to 2013, she was a favorite of many as April Scott on Home and Away. Fish also danced her heart out in the 13th season of “Dancing with the Stars”! In 2016, she took a darker turn as Ontari in The 100.

She discovered her love for acting at the early age of 11 and never looked back! Now she headlines a number of Hallmark films every year.

Markian Tarasiuk portrays Andy. According to his biography, he began taking acting lessons at age six and appeared in his first play at age 14 in Winnipeg. He appeared in numerous productions in Canada, including There’s Someone Inside Your House and Christmas Jars, which earned him a UBCP/ACTRA Best Supporting Actor nomination and a Best Actor nomination at the Canadian Screen Awards. Beyond acting, he was general manager and artistic producer of SpeakEasy Theater in Vancouver from 2015 to 2021 and received five Jessie Award nominations for the production of The Shipment.
