Where will it snow next? See where Winter Storm Cora is headed

Another bout of widespread ice and snowfall is forecast to immediately follow a massive winter storm that hit much of the United States this week.

The impending wintry blast, which the Weather Channel has dubbed “Winter Storm Cora,” will likely be felt along an 800-mile stretch of the southern U.S. from Texas to the Carolinas. 3 to 6 inches of snow could fall within the section, but the biggest threat to many cities could be ice formation.

The wintry mix could snarl traffic traveling east, bringing light snow, sleet and freezing rain, or drizzle as far north as Virginia and even the Ohio Valley in the Northeast.

Here’s a look at the weather forecast for parts of the southern US that could see the most snow and ice as Winter Storm Cora looms:

Arkansas

In Arkansas, the largest accumulations are expected in the west-central to central region of the state.

The capital city of Little Rock and surrounding areas are under a winter storm warning and there could be between 6 and 8 inches of snow between Thursday and Friday, the weather service predicts.

Florida

Devastating freeze damage is expected to occur in Florida along the central Gulf Coast and Florida Peninsula between Thursday and Sunday.

If subfreezing temperatures weren’t bad enough, cold rains will hit areas along the Interstate 10 corridor through Jacksonville, including the Florida Panhandle and Tallahassee, according to AccuWeather meteorologists. While a southern track could provide just the right conditions for some snow, the storm is expected to bring mostly rain to the state.

Georgia

Freezing rain and resulting ice accumulations are possible later this week in parts of north Georgia, where temperatures could range between 22 and 30 degrees in the Atlanta, Athens and Augusta areas.

For the most part, Georgia will have little or no impact from the winter storm. However, North Georgia may experience some wintry weather Friday through Saturday, including some snow, ice and/or sleet Friday in the Atlanta and Athens metropolitan areas.

Kansas

Light snow accumulations of no more than two inches were possible in areas of southern Kansas, according to the weather service.

Kentucky

Parts of east-central, north-central, northwest and south-central Kentucky are under a winter storm watch from late Thursday through late Friday evening, according to the weather service. Between 4 and 5 inches of snow is expected to fall, but higher amounts are possible.

Louisiana

The National Weather Service has issued a cold weather warning for Louisiana.

The upcoming storm could bring snow to northern Louisiana, and some forecasts call for snow early Friday morning. Additionally, the National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning and a cold front is expected to bring temperatures below freezing.

Missouri

Snow is likely to fall across much of southwest Missouri Thursday evening through Friday, according to the weather service. With the snow likely to develop into bands, “snow amounts could fluctuate over relatively short distances,” the NWS said.

North Carolina

The NWS said 1 to 3 inches of snow could fall across North Carolina by Saturday.

Oklahoma

While parts of Oklahoma are under a winter storm watch, only a light layer of snow – up to an inch – is forecast for Oklahoma City itself, according to the weather service.

South Carolina

In South Carolina, a wintry mix is possible in central parts, including the Columbia Capital Region, Friday into the night, according to the weather service. This includes freezing rain, which is possible along and northwest of Interstate-20 into early Saturday.

The most snowfall, anywhere from 1 to 5 inches, is expected north of Columbia, including in Greenville.

Texas

North Texas is under both a winter storm watch and warning along and north of Interstate-20. According to the weather service, snowfall accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are possible in the warning area, and isolated snowfall amounts of up to 8 inches are expected in more intense bands north of Dallas and Forth Worth.

Virginia

The weather service said up to 2 inches of snow will fall in many Virginia cities through Saturday, including the capital, Richmond.
