Department store Macy’s Inc. said Thursday it will close 66 underperforming stores in 2025.

Why it matters

The department store has been struggling with declining sales that have impacted the entire retail sector for years as traditional stores compete with fast-fashion retailers and digital outlets, Axios reported.

The closures, which follow a surge in the number of closed stores in 2024, mean fewer brick-and-mortar options for consumers.

Macy’s locations are closing

In February, the department store announced its “Bold New Chapter” strategy, which includes these closures.

The plan aims to “return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth, which includes closing approximately 150 underproductive stores over three years while investing in the 350 future Macy’s stores by fiscal year 2026,” it said in a news release from the store on Thursday.

Macy’s said most of the 66 locations scheduled to close in 2025 are expected to close in the first quarter of the year. Stores are spread across 22 states listed below.

Arizona

In Mesa, Arizona, tThe Macy’s store at Superstition Springs Center is set to close.

California

In California, seven Macy’s stores are closing: the Otay Ranch Town Center location in Chula Vista; the Sunrise Mall location in Citrus Heights; the Village at Corte Madera at 1400 Redwood Highway; the Broadway Plaza location in Los Angeles; the NewPark Mall location in Newark; the Downtown Commons location in Sacramento; and the Westminster Mall location in Westminster.

The stores at Mission Valley Home in San Diego and Hillsdale Furniture in San Mateo have already closed.

Colorado

In Centennial, Colorado, the Macy’s Southglenn Furniture store has already closed, and the Shops at Northfield location in Denver is scheduled to close this year.

Florida

In Florida, six stores are closing: the Altamonte Furniture location in Altamonte Springs; the Boynton Beach Mall location in Boyton Beach; the Fort Lauderdale Furniture location in Fort Lauderdale; the Pembroke Furniture location in Pembroke Pines; the Westfield Siesta Key location in Sarasota; and the West Shore Plaza location in Tampa.

Stores at South Dade Furniture in Miami and Boca Raton Furniture in Boca Raton have already closed.

Georgia

Three stores are slated to close in Georgia: two Duluth stores, one in Gwinnett Furniture and the other at Gwinnett Place Mall, and a third store at Johns Creek Town Center in Suwanee.

Idaho

In Idaho, the Silver Lake Mall store in Coeur d’Alene is closing.

Illinois

In Illinois, the White Oaks Mall store in Springfield is closing.

Louisiana

In Louisiana, the store at Acadiana Mall in Lafayette is closing.

Maryland

In Maryland, two stores are slated to close: Harford Mall in Bel Air and Security Square Mall in Baltimore.

Massachusetts

In Massachusetts, the Independence Mall location in Kingston is closing.

Michigan

Four stores will close in Michigan: the Genesee Valley Center location in Flint; the Lakeside Mall location in Sterling Heights; the Grand Traverse Mall location in Traverse City; and the Oakland Mall location in Troy.

Minnesota

In Minnesota, two stores will be closing: the Burnsville Center location in Burnsville and the Maplewood Mall location in Maplewood.

Missouri

Two stores will be closing in Missouri: the Metro North Mall location in Kansas City and the South County Center location in St. Louis.

New Jersey

In New Jersey, the store at the Essex Green Shopping Center in West Orange is scheduled to close.

new York

In New York, nine stores are set to close – including two locations in Brooklyn, one in Sheepshead Bay and the other at 422 Fulton Street.

The other stores closing are at Fordham Place in the Bronx; Queens Place in Elmhurst; Melville Mall in Huntington; Lake Success in New Hyde Park; Sunrise Mall in Massapequa; Greece Ridge Mall in Rochester; and Staten Island Furniture in Staten Island.

Ohio

In Ohio, two stores will be closing: the Fairfield Commons location in Beavercreek and the Franklin Park location in Toledo.

Oregon

In Oregon, two stores will be closing: the Streets of Tanasbourne location in Hillsboro and the Salem Center location in Salem.

Pennsylvania

Four stores will close in Pennsylvania: the Logan Valley Mall location in Altoona; the Exton Square Mall location in Exton; the location in downtown Philadelphia; and the Wyoming Valley Mall location in Wilkes-Barre.

Tennessee

In Tennessee, the Oak Court store in Memphis is scheduled to close.

Texas

In Texas, six stores will close: the Southlake Town Square location in Southlake; the Highlands of Flower Mound site in Flower Mound; the WestBend location in Fort Worth; the Almeda Mall location in Houston; the Shops at Willow Bend location in Plano; and the Village at Fairview location in Fairview.

Virginia

In Virginia, the store at the Southpark Mall in Colonial Heights is scheduled to close.

Washington

In Washington, three stores will close: the South Hill Mall location in Puyallup; the Redmond Furniture location in Redmond; and the Kitsap Mall location in Silverdale.
