White House aides covered up President Biden’s apparent mental decline from day one of his presidency, shielding the aging commander in chief from the public and even rearranging his schedule after scattered appearances, an explosive report revealed Thursday.

The lack of access in Washington to the country’s oldest president is well known – Biden held the fewest major press conferences in modern history and frequently blundered during his appearance – but the White House made up for it, according to aides, Democratic lawmakers and The ambiguity has so far remained hidden from donors who spoke to the Wall Street Journal.

Immediately after he took office amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the president’s staff formed a tight protective blanket around the 82-year-old Biden, with aides immediately limiting his personal contacts in January 2021.

But staffers also began making adjustments to daily schedules when the president appeared tired or continually stumbled on the world stage — both figuratively and literally.

Until spring 2021, meetings were postponed to accommodate his “good and bad days.”

According to the Journal, a national security official told a staffer at the time: “He has good days and bad days, and today was a bad day, so we’ll deal with it tomorrow.”

Meetings were often scheduled for later in the day – a fact that first came to light after Biden’s debate flop against President-elect Donald Trump, when staff admitted that the then-Democratic nominee was struggling to function outside of a six-hour window that began daily around 4 p.m Clock ended.

Once in the room with the president, officials were instructed to keep their briefings short and to the point. Private conversations with some of his top Cabinet members, including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, became increasingly rare.

A Cabinet official eventually stopped arranging talks with the commander-in-chief after being repeatedly rebuffed, a former aide has revealed.

The White House also hired a vocal coach, Hollywood mogul and campaign co-chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg, to try to improve his weak, gravelly tone.

Other aides removed negative stories from Biden’s daily newscasts, misleading him about the public’s opinion of his job performance – which in 2024 reached its lowest level in 70 years.

Deputy press secretary Andrew Bates disputed his boss’s characterization.

“President Biden speaks with members of his Cabinet daily and with most members several times a week, remaining closely engaged with them on implementing important legislation and strengthening our national security,” Bates said in a statement.

“President Biden is leading a modern government. Cabinet meetings are an important tradition, but the modern working environment means they can occur less frequently.”

But the signs were there throughout his tenure in the Oval Office: He frequently relied on note cards, was seen having large instructions printed for him, often confused the names of foreign dignitaries or other facts, and made a gaffe when speaking from the The script deviated or it ignored its teleprompter.

The president’s meeting with special counsel Robert Hur over what was later deemed a “deliberate” withholding of classified documents also tested his mental stamina.

According to the WSJ, Biden was the one who pushed for the Hur interview, and aides supported the decision in hopes of showing that Biden was more cooperative than Trump, his then-opponent in the 2024 presidential race.

But preparing for the interview quickly gave me a headache. Prep sessions lasted three hours a day and Biden forgot his “lines” and fluctuated in his energy levels, the outlet said. A transcript released after the grueling two-day affair in October 2023 revealed that he had forgotten the year his son Beau Biden died of brain cancer.

A Bidenworld source dismissed the president’s blurred recall, telling The Post: “Every person who has ever prepared for a legal interview has forgotten some part of the preparation.”

The ring around Biden was equally tight during his short and unsuccessful re-election campaign, with aides answering so many questions that it surprised donors at the level of their control.

The Democratic candidate was previously briefed on his numbers by pollster John Anzalone during his successful 2020 campaign, but by 2024, poll results were no longer passed directly to Biden, instead being passed on to campaign aides in the form of memos.

The withholding of information particularly worried pollsters in the Biden campaign as Trump’s numbers began to rise.

According to the Journal, campaign officials were also worried that first lady Jill Biden would overshadow the president even during the 2020 primaries.

“The more you cajole her, the worse he looks,” her then-press secretary Michael LaRosa told the outlet, saying he was instructed by Jill’s closest confidant, White House staffer Anthony Bernal.

During her husband’s time in office, the first lady even tried to discourage him from staying alone for too long at press conferences because she feared he would be surprised by questions as time went on.

“President Biden has achieved the most successful record of any modern commander in chief, rebuilding the middle class, by paying attention to policy details that impact millions of lives and by actively seeking diverse opinions from outside experts, everyday Americans and members of Congress and other elected officials, his Cabinet and historians, and his determination to implement a comprehensive economic agenda that achieves the key priorities Democrats have worked toward for decades,” Bates added in a statement to The Post.

“During any presidency, there are inevitably some in Washington who do not spend as much time with the president as they would like; But that never means the president doesn’t engage deeply with others, as this president does.”
