When Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter entered the White House in 1977, they were the first couple since John F. Kennedy to raise their children in the executive mansion on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Over the years, their family continued to grow, adding nearly two dozen grandchildren and great-grandchildren to the Carter clan.

“We have a big family now. We have 22 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, 38 total,” Carter told CNN in 2015.

“So we’re trying to keep our family together and just enjoy family life.”

Rosalynn passed away in November 2023. Carter became the longest-living president when he turned 98 in October 2022. He died on Sunday, December 29, at the age of 100, his son announced. No immediate reason was given.

“It was impressive to see how my grandfather lived his values ​​throughout these decades,” said his grandson Jason Carter People in a previous interview. “My earliest memories are of his years in the White House, and I grew up with and learned from his faith and his belief in equality and respect for all people.”

In February 2023, Carter entered hospice care after several hospital stays.

On October 1, 2024, he celebrated his 100th birthday and gathered with loved ones in the backyard of his home to watch a military flypast in his honor. His grandson Jason said he was also looking forward to voting for Kamala Harris in the November election.

John Carter

John William “Jack” Carter, 77, is the eldest son of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter.

He spent his early adult years at the Georgia Institute of Technology, but later left to join the U.S. Navy and serve during the Vietnam War.

He was eventually discharged after being caught smoking marijuana while stationed in Idaho. However, he later returned to Georgia Tech and earned a degree in nuclear physics.

Like his father, Mr. Carter was active in U.S. politics, winning the 2006 Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in Nevada but losing the general election to Republican John Ensign.

His main issues during the campaign were opposition to the Iraq War and improving health care, particularly for veterans.

“We left Afghanistan out of sight, that should have been the focus,” he said during a campaign stop with his father Tahoe Daily Tribune.

James Earl “Chip” Carter III, 74, the second oldest son, was named after his father and grandfather. He had a son with his first wife, Caron Griffin, whom he also named.

He worked for a time in the family peanut warehouse before being elected to the Plains City Council and serving on the Democratic National Committee.

Jimmy Carter revealed it in the documentary Jimmy Carter: Rock & Roll President that Chip and singer Willie Nelson smoked marijuana on the roof of the White House.

“When Willie Nelson wrote his autobiography, he confessed that he smoked weed in the White House one night while he was staying with me,” Carter said in the documentary. “And he says that his companion who shared the pot with him was one of the servants in the White House. That’s not entirely true – it was actually one of my sons who he didn’t want to classify as a marijuana smoker like him.”

Donnel “Jeff” Carter, 72, is the youngest of the Carter brothers.

He studied geography and computer cartography and later founded the company Computer Mapping Consultants with his former professor the same year he graduated, he said Time Magazine.

He had three children, Joshua, Jeremy and James, but Jeremy died of an apparent heart attack in 2015 at the age of 28. Donnel lost his wife Annette, 68, in 2021.

He met her on her first day of school at Georgia Southwestern State University.

Joshua Carter wrote in an obituary for his mother: “Jeff saw her across the student center while playing spades, and he told his friends to turn around and look at the pretty girl who had just walked in. He told them he would marry her, and four years later he did.”

They were married for 46 years.

Amy Carter, 57, is the only daughter and, at 15, the youngest child of the former president and first lady.

Ms. Carter spent her childhood in the White House while her father was president, thrusting her into the political and media spotlight from a young age.

She was born in October 1967 and was nine years old when her father became president.

She later became known for her political activism, such as taking part in protests and sit-ins against US foreign policy in Central America and apartheid in South Africa.

Once in 1986, Ms. Carter and several others were arrested during a protest against CIA recruitment. She was therefore acquitted of charges of disorderly conduct and trespassing The New York Times.

She illustrated her father’s children’s book, The little baby Snoogle Fleejerwhich was published in 1995.

Ms. Carter has two sons from two marriages.

In recent years she has kept a low profile. In 2020, she became a member of the Carter Center Board of Councilors.
