Amy was born on October 19, 1967 to Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Plains, Georgia. Before she was born, the family made the decision to have another child. including the three sons.

She was only three years old when her father became governor of Georgia; Then, when she was nine years old, Jimmy Carter became the 39th President of the United States and the family moved to the White House.

Amy attended a public school during her time in Washington, D.C., an unusual choice for presidential children. She later studied at the Brown University, Memphis College of Art and Tulane University.

Carter was politically active As a young woman, she joined many protests Various causes in the 1980s and 1990sincluding Apartheid and US foreign policy in Central America and South Africa.

That was her arrested during a demonstration from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1986, but was acquitted after arguing that the protest was necessary to prevent greater harm.
