It’s been a season full of twists and turns, but the first part of the Season 47 finale of “Survivor” proved that the six remaining finalists still had a few tricks up their sleeves.

The episode started with six players, which became five, and finally ended with four players, all vying to win the $1 million prize. Episode 13, titled “Bob and Weave,” is the first part of the two-part Season 47 finale that will air over the next two weeks.

In Season 47 of the long-running reality competition show, which first aired on CBS in 2000, players are stranded on an island and must survive on meager food, clothing and shelter, compete in challenges and form alliances to vote out other tribe members. The last player standing wins the title of Sole Survivor and the $1 million prize that comes with it.

The first immunity challenge required contestants to dive and swim through water and solve a puzzle at the end. For the first time this season, Genevieve Mushaluk won immunity and the food reward and decided to bring Sue Smey and Teeny Chirichillo to dinner for the first time in days.

Mushaluk tried to convince Smey and Chirichillo to vote for the person they saw as the biggest threat: Rachel LaMont. What Mushaluk didn’t know was that LaMont had both a hidden immunity idol and a block-a-vote advantage, giving her and her ally Smey the chance to almost handpick who would go home.

At first, LaMont and Smey wanted to vote for Sam Phalen, but Andy Rueda’s cocky attitude bothered the pair. After the majority wrote down her name, LaMont used her hidden immunity idol against herself at Tribal Council and blocked Phalen’s vote to send Rueda, a 31-year-old AI research assistant, to the jury.

After Rueda was voted out, both LaMont and Mushaluk recognized each other as major threats and possible contenders to win the $1 million prize. They continued to go head-to-head, with Mushaluk even babysitting LaMont to prevent them from finding another immunity idol.

The episode’s second immunity challenge required the remaining five players to navigate another obstacle course and balance balls on top of each other while balancing on a precarious diving board. It was a tough battle, but LaMont prevailed over Mushaluk and earned individual immunity for the third time this season.

Back in the camp, the question arose as to whether to vote out either Mushaluk or Phalen. Wary of Mushaluk holding a potential immunity idol, the remaining three players split the Tribal Council votes between the two.

In the end, there was no immunity idol and the majority of the three players voted for Mushaluk, a 33-year-old corporate lawyer, to also be added to the jury.

Who went home on “Survivor” last week?

After Sam Phalen won the reward challenge, host Jeff Probst allowed him to select two additional people to accompany him to the festival and overnight stay at the “Survivor” sanctuary. He chose his fellow outcast Genevieve Mushaluk and former tribemate Andy Rueda.

Away from the others, following the feast they had just eaten, the trio carried out a multi-pronged plan called “Operation Italy.” The most important step for Rueda was to abandon the “outsider” alliance of Sue Smey, Caroline Vidmar, Rachel LaMont and Teeny Chirichillo while convincing them that he was on their side.

Back at camp, Rueda’s job was to convince his alliance that Mushaluk had a hidden immunity idol to split the votes between her and Phalen, and the trio would then ultimately vote out LaMont, who they considered to be the biggest threat in the game .

But LaMont earned his second consecutive immunity victory in the immunity challenge, sending the “Operation: Italy” members thinking about a second option: Vidmar.

At tribal council they remained quiet and never mentioned their real motivations, and Vidmar, a 27-year-old strategy consultant from Chicago, was none the wiser. When her name was read out for the third and majority vote, the rest of the underdog alliance was shocked when she received the majority of votes to go home.
