Who is Todd McLellan? Get to know the Red Wings’ new coach after his firing

The Detroit Red Wings have turned to a familiar and successful face for a coaching change.

Todd McLellan was named head coach of the Wings on Thursday, the third day of the NHL break, while head coach Derek Lalonde and assistant coach Bob Boughner were relieved of their duties. Also on Thursday, the Wings named Trent Yawney an assistant coach.

McLellan’s first game will be Friday when the Wings host the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Wings enter this game having hit what the franchise hopes is a low point with Monday’s 4-0 loss to the St. Louis Blues, part of a three-game losing streak.

McClellan knows Detroit

McLellan, 57, takes over a team that has struggled far more than expected, despite general manager Steve Yzerman failing to improve the team in the offseason. The list of players who have disappointed and underperformed is long, starting with Vladimir Tarasenko, who is on pace to score 10 goals this season and next in return for $4.75 million in earnings.
