Who is Tyler Warren? Penn State's tight end is the best in college football

Penn State football’s Tyler Warren became a household name in college football this year.

Warren, a 6-foot-10 fifth-grader, was the Nittany Lions’ best offensive weapon this season, leading the team in receptions and receiving yards. At times he was even active as a running back.

Penn State desperately needed better pass-catching performance from second-year quarterback Drew Allar this season, and Warren came to the rescue. He will certainly be relied upon in the Nittany Lions’ first-round game with No. 11 SMU in the College Football Playoff.

Warren made a big jump from his junior to senior season and is expected to be one of the first tight ends selected in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Who is Tyler Warren?

Warren is a fifth-year senior tight end at Penn State and led the team in receptions (88), receiving yards (1,062) and receiving touchdowns (six) this season. His receptions and receiving yards totals also set Big Ten single-season records in 2024.

The 2024 Mackey Award recipient – given to the best tight end in the country – also finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting, one of the highest finishes for a tight end in recent history.

However, Warren was more than just a tight end this season: He also appeared as a quarterback and running back in special packages. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound target has rushed for 191 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries this season.

Warren’s best game this season came against USC, when he had 224 receiving yards and a touchdown on 17 receptions in the 33-30 overtime win. He has surpassed 100 yards receiving four times this season and has had two multi-touchdown games this year.

The Mechanicsville, Virginia, native thrived this season under first-year offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki, as he recorded 34 receptions for 422 yards with seven touchdowns last season, marking a big jump as a senior. He had six carries for 6 yards with two touchdowns in 2021, but wasn’t used as a runner that much again until 2024.

Warren is also the only Big Ten tight end since at least 1956 with four or more rushing touchdowns in a season.
