Who plays Aqua in “Missing You” on Netflix? Meet Mary Malone

After the success of Fool me onceBestselling author Harlan Coben returns with another gripping mystery thriller that’s climbing the Netflix charts. Miss youAdapted from his 2014 novel, it follows Detective Kat Donovan as she uncovers the disappearance of her ex-fiancé and the mystery surrounding her father’s death a decade earlier.

The limited series features a mix of new and familiar English talent including Rosalind Eleazar, Ashley Walters, Jessica Plummer, Richard Armitage and more. However, one cast member in particular has caught viewers’ attention – the actress who plays Aqua, one of Kat’s closest friends.

Aqua, a yoga instructor, is the reason Kat and Josh met, as she was Josh’s roommate. But when Josh suddenly disappears, Kat’s relentless pursuit of answers forces Aqua to confront her own hidden truths and draws her into a tangled web of secrets – including a heartbreaking scene in Episode 5.

Who plays Aqua In? Miss you?

Aqua on Netflix Miss you is portrayed by Mary Malone, an aspiring trans actress from the UK, currently in her mid-20s. Malone recently appeared in 2023 Doctor Who Christmas special where she portrayed Trudy, a friend of Ruby.

According to her Spotlight profile, Malone began her acting career in 2020, the same year she graduated from the University of Essex. She made her television debut with a guest role on STARZ The Girlfriend Experience. Since then she has appeared in short films and television series such as: chivalry, octopus, And Vera.

In addition to her film work, Malone is a theater actress. She has appeared on stages across the UK, including in the West End production of As you like it, the piece The Princeand the musical Fangirls. According to Marie Claire, she is also proficient in singing, dancing, piano, puppetry, and visual arts.

What did Mary Malone say about playing aqua? Miss you?

In a recent interview with Country & Town House, Mary Malone described her character Aqua in Miss you as a “cheeky yoga teacher” who is interested in chakras, crystals and the like. As the series progresses, however, “we meet a complex and surprising Aqua who is forced to confront her haunting past.” She fiercely protects the people she loves, even if it harms herself. With Josh’s reappearance, her relationship with Kat will be tested as they grapple with their shared history and grief.”

For the role, Malone performed some of her own stunts, although she had a stunt double to assist. “I wanted to throw myself into it,” she said of her preparation process. While reading parts of Harlan Coben’s book, Malone noticed that some changes were made for the adaptation, particularly for Aqua. (For example, in the book, Aqua is referred to as a “transvestite,” a term now considered outdated and offensive.)

“I thought it made more sense to focus on the pages, on the new Aqua and how we wanted to recreate her for this series,” she said C&TH. “I think this was a great opportunity to show people that you can turn things around and make changes to better represent trans characters. I was really impressed with Harlan and Victoria who made this turnaround possible.”

While Malone couldn’t reveal any details about her upcoming projects, she hinted at exciting things ahead and encouraged fans to “watch this space.” “I hope Miss you will show people that they can cast transsexuals in more interesting and fulfilling roles. I hope for more opportunities at this level,” she said in her interview with C&TH.

When asked about her dream role, the British actress revealed a lifelong fascination with mermaids. “I love films like this Squirt, Lady in the water, The bait. I have been drawn to mermaids and the sea since I was a child. So I’m waiting for AV screening for a badass queer mermaid movie…Anytime…” she said.
