Everything continues to go in the right direction for the Kansas City Chiefs this season.

The two-time defending Super Bowl champions secured another narrow victory when they edged the Los Angeles Chargers on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” on Dec. 8, thanks to a crazy field goal as time expired by backup kicker Matthew Wright , who stepped in due to injuries to the team’s two best kickers. It was Wright’s fourth field goal of the game.

Trailing the Chiefs’ AFC West rival 17-16, Wright made the shot – but not before it hit the left post and sailed through the goal, sending the home crowd into an uproar.

“This is awesome for the Chiefs’ division!” said NBC play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico as the kick flew over the uprights.

The win meant the Chiefs, whose record was 12-1, won the division for the ninth consecutive season. The only major winning streak in NFL history is thanks to the New England Patriots, who won 11 AFC East titles from 2009 to 2019 while Tom Brady played quarterback there.

It is the second week in a row that the Chiefs defeated a division opponent 19-17. On November 29, they beat the Las Vegas Raiders in another thriller by the same score after Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell fumbled the ball with 15 seconds left in the game and the Chiefs recovered the ball.

The victory over the Chargers was also the sixth game this season that the Chiefs won on the final play of the game. Wright, along with starting kicker Harrison Butker and backup Spencer Shrader, are among the players who have hit walk-off field goals for the team this season.

The Chiefs have excelled at winning close games this season, with 10 of their 12 wins coming in one-possession games.

“We keep the ratings, baby. Keep the scores,” defensive lineman Chris Jones said after the win.

“I’m preparing for the later playoffs when every game will be close. There will be a similar atmosphere at every game. Very tight, very close. Maybe it comes down to a field goal to win the game and we know how to finish.”

The Chiefs will visit the Cleveland Browns next week, while the Chargers, who fell to 8-5 with a loss to Kansas City, host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
