WASHINGTON – Commemorations began Saturday to honor the late former President Jimmy Carter, who died on December 29, 2024 at the age of 100.

The nation’s 39th president will be honored at a series of events and honors across the state and country as Georgia, the nation and the world pause to remember Carter’s life and legacy. The culmination will be a national funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC

Following the death of former President Jimmy Carter, President Joe Biden ordered all American flags across the country to be flown at half-staff for the next 30 days.

Biden announced that as an expression of mourning, flags would be flown at half-staff at the White House, on all public buildings and grounds, on all military posts and naval stations, and on all federal government naval vessels in Washington DC and throughout the United States and its territories.

That means flags will be flown at half-mast at President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20th.

“I also direct that United States representatives abroad shall, for the same period of time, make similar arrangements for the flying of the flag at half-staff over their embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including…” “All military installations and naval ships and stations,” Biden announced.

Biden also announced that he has declared January 9, 2025, a national day of mourning throughout the United States.

“I call on the American people to gather in their respective houses of worship on this day to remember President James Earl Carter Jr. “I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn celebration,” Biden said in a statement.

Former President Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, whose post-presidential humanitarian work set a modern standard for the kind of legacy presidents can leave after their time in the White House, has died at the age of 100.

“Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia,” the Carter Center announced in a social media post on Sunday.

Jimmy Carter’s son Chip Carter said in a statement that his father was a “hero, not just to me, but to all who believe in peace, human rights and selfless love.”

“My brothers, my sister and I shared it with the rest of the world through these shared beliefs. The world is our family because he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs,” said Chip Carter.

The Carter Center said public memorials will be held in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., followed by a private internment in Plains. A final schedule is still being formalized and will be posted at this link, the Carter Center said.

With his 100th birthday on October 1, 2024, President Carter reached a milestone as the longest-living U.S. president that no other holder of this title has achieved. He is the only president from Georgia.
