Why did Michelle Obama miss Jimmy Carter's funeral?

As is customary with former presidents, Jimmy Carter’s funeral Thursday brought to the National Cathedral in Washington a who’s who list of national leaders who came to honor the 39th commander in chief.

The first two pews of the church were filled with former presidents and their spouses, including President Joe Biden, first lady Jill Biden, as well as President-elect Donald Trump and his wife Melania, and Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff in the front row.

Conspicuously absent, however, was former first lady Michelle Obama, whose office did not provide details about why she skipped the proceedings.

“Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not be attending President Carter’s National Funeral Service,” spokeswoman Crystal Carson said in a statement to USA TODAY. “Mrs. Obama sends her thoughts and prayers to the Carter family and to all who loved and learned from the remarkable former president.”

CNN reported that Michelle Obama had “schedule conflicts” on Thursday and was staying in Hawaii.

During the 2024 presidential campaign, Michelle Obama, whom many Democrats wanted to run for president, sharply criticized Trump at various points. The same was true of her husband, former President Barack Obama, who chatted, smiled and laughed for several minutes with Trump, his successor in the White House, before Carter’s funeral began.
