Why Iowa State is likely to avoid rushing fines

AMES – Sometimes the best moments of celebration come with a price tag. The fines that college football conferences impose on universities for fans who storm the field can reach six figures, but Iowa State appeared to have dodged a hefty fine on Saturday.

At Jack Trice Stadium, 56,228 ISU football fans were in attendance to watch Iowa State defeat Kansas State 29-21. After the Cyclones won the game, which helped them earn an appearance in the Big 12 Championship Game against Arizona State, many fans rushed the field and sang Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” along with their favorite players.

Iowa State appears to have avoided a fine, ISU athletic director Jamie Pollard said The Quad City Times Saturday.

“We don’t get fined in the Big 12 for fans rushing the field,” Pollard said. “You get punished if you don’t have a protocol and a plan, and I stayed up in the press box to watch from above. “We followed our protocol, we followed our plan. We kicked K-State off the field, so I don’t expect us to be fined. But it was great to see our fans celebrating like that.”

Last week, the Big 12 publicly reprimanded Arizona State and fined it $25,000 after fans streamed onto the field before the end of the game against BYU. The SEC, which has different rules, fined Auburn $100,000 for fans who stormed the field after an overtime win against Texas A&M and fined Oklahoma $200,000 for storming the field stormed early before a surprising win over Alabama was officially over.

Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark was in attendance at the Iowa State game on Saturday, watching the first quarter from the press box before moving to the television booth.

Pollard thanked the Cyclone fans who sat in subfreezing temperatures watching Iowa State win 10 games for the first time in program history.

“That’s what I’m looking forward to, our fans,” Pollard said. “All the fans that came out tonight and sat in the cold to see something that’s never been seen at Iowa State, and honestly, there probably is.” A lot of people thought they’d never see it and thought , that it could never be done at Iowa State.
