The Church in Rome officially adopted December 25 as the date of Christmas in 336 AD, during the reign of Emperor Constantine.

A prevailing theory for this choice is that December 25th coincided with Saturnalia, a Roman festival honoring Saturn, the god of agriculture. This orientation facilitated the transition from pagan traditions to the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus. Saturnalia, characterized by celebrations, giving and happiness, laid the foundation for many modern Christmas traditions.

As Christianity spread, Christmas celebrations evolved, incorporating elements from different cultures. Religious tales such as the story of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem inspired traditions such as nativity scenes, carols, and gift exchanges, reflecting the gifts of the Magi to the infant Jesus.

Over the centuries, Christmas has incorporated customs from different regions. In medieval Europe it became a time of festive feasts, theatrical performances and community gatherings. Even pagan symbols like the Yule log were adopted into Christmas traditions, symbolizing warmth and light during the winter solstice.

The Industrial Revolution further changed Christmas celebrations, introducing innovations and popularizing new customs. This included the widespread adoption of Christmas trees, a tradition that originated in Germany and gained worldwide acceptance in the 19th century.
