Biden is the worst president in American history

Without question, historians will view the last four years of Joe Biden’s leadership as disastrous and with negative consequences.

Firstly, there is a long list of things that can only be described as pure incompetence. Starting with the failed withdrawal from Afghanistan, the open border, record inflation, the massive increase in national debt, etc., Biden has done more than any other president to damage America’s future.

Second, his intellectual competency was in question from the start of his campaign and throughout his term in office. Robert Hur’s account of his handling of classified documents contained dramatic evidence of his poor mental state. He should have been removed from office immediately after his inauguration.

Again, history will not only show that he is the worst president in American history, but it will also show Congress’s lack of courage in removing him as he stumbled disastrously during his four years in office.

Bernie Moreno should learn from Sherrod Brown

Re “Brown Ponders ‘Mission’ After Exit,” December 26: Thanks for the great article about Sherrod Brown. His dedication and commitment to the people of Ohio were outstanding. We will always be grateful for his tireless work on behalf of the people of our state.

As for the Bernie Moreno quote, the man won the election but continues to insult his opponent. The only thing worse than a sore loser is a sore winner.

Maybe the self-proclaimed “used car salesman” himself could spend some time thinking about his plans to help the hardworking people of Ohio. This is what we really want to hear, not more negative rhetoric.

If he needs ideas, he can look to Senator Brown’s many accomplishments.

Bryan’s homeless population still needs help

Re: “Why my town had to take over Dad’s Place,” Dec. 27: Just a quick question for City of Bryan Mayor Carrie Schlade: While the church, Dad’s Place, is either working to comply with fire codes and zoning laws – or else not – where are you hosting the 15 to 20 people who lived there this winter?

You neglected to mention this in your last column.

Living our values is what makes America great

Rex Huppke’s opinion piece “2024 was a bad year for America (December 29)” can be seen as a clarion call for all of us to demonstrate the decency that lies within each of us.

Let us not surrender our integrity and decency to those sworn into political power.

Each of us has the choice to demonstrate, individually and collectively, the positive character traits that we as a nation value and want to pass on to future generations: honesty, integrity, kindness, compassion, loyalty, responsibility, courage, respect, fairness, perseverance, patience, Generosity, empathy, trustworthiness, hard work, creativity, optimism, reliability, sense of responsibility, self-discipline and open-mindedness.

I believe the vast majority of us aspire to these qualities. All that is required is that we live them out. This is what will continue to make America great.

Heed the warning about RFK Jr.

Nobel laureates rarely get involved in politics, but recently more than 75 of them from the fields of medicine, chemistry, economics and physics wrote a letter to senators urging them to support Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s pick for secretary of state Health and Human Services, not to be confirmed.

They reject Kennedy’s attitude toward the scientists and agencies he would oversee. They also found that he has no qualifications or relevant experience and that he has opposed life-saving vaccines, spread conspiracy theories and attacked the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health.

They wrote that handing over leadership of the Department of Health and Human Services to RFK Jr. “would endanger public health and undermine America’s global leadership in the health sciences in both the public and commercial sectors.”

Hopefully the strong condemnation from some of America’s top scientists will strengthen the backbone of Republican senators enough to take on one of Donald Trump’s most dangerous candidates.

The Unhinged States of America

Hey, before we reject Trump’s latest seemingly crazy idea to annex Canada, I propose a modified alternative: Allow Canada to annex the entire West Coast United States, the New England States, and New York and New Jersey. Let Alaska, Hawaii and the territories choose.

That would make for a sensible social conglomerate with an existing, equally sensible parliamentary government that would be a cohesive unit spanning the remaining MAGA states in the South and other inland states of the US. These states could even keep the name “USA” (Unhinged States of America)!

Give the entire process 25 years – about a generation – so that the residents of each division can move to the North American region where they would feel freer, more accepted and more comfortable. Use these 25 years to collect federal assets – e.g. B. the dollars remaining in the existing US Treasury, atomic bombs, warships, fighter jets, buildings, national parks, etc. – and liabilities – e.g. B. the actuarial present value of planned social security benefits – reallocated payments, the national debt, etc.

Makes as much sense as keeping what appears to be our only “DSA” (Disunited States of America) in place now and probably forever.

Humanitarian efforts should count

The shooting of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO is sad and should not have happened. The frustration is somewhat understandable when you consider how executives are compensated based solely on profits at the expense of their customers.

In the case of insurance companies, denial of necessary medical procedures increases their profits. There are people who die or commit suicide because of claims that are rejected because of corporate greed. Executive compensation should also be based on humanitarian efforts and not just on increasing company profits.

Jimmy Carter and the Federal Debt

When we think about the death of former President Jimmy Carter, I remember the 1980 debates with then-candidate Ronald Reagan, who declared he would balance the budget. Ha, what a laugh that is.

As you may remember, this was the first step in trickle-down economics. Lower taxes and investments will follow. To illustrate, the federal debt in 1980, much of it defense spending, was $908 billion. Today it is $36 trillion and rising. Clearly more of the same is on the way. These are facts.
