It’s safe to say that most people are hoping for some luck in 2025, but could that come from a pair of underwear?

Many on TikTok argue that this is possible. The tradition of wearing underwear of certain colors on New Year’s Eve is a superstition that has recently gained traction online. Rooted in Latin American and European cultures, this practice involves wearing underwear of different colors to attract certain types of luck or energy in the coming year.

The superstitions surrounding the color of underwear on New Year’s Eve

While cultures around the world practice and have practiced the New Year’s underwear superstition, TikTok is adding to its popularity this year. A video posted by Liberty Walker received over 221,000 views in less than 24 hours.

“The color of your underwear will be what you want to wear in the new year,” Walker said via @libertyavawalker in the video, before going through the colors and the meanings associated with them.

Anabel Maldonado, founder of PSYKHE and fashion psychologist, shared Pop sugar in December that the superstition surrounding underwear color on New Year’s Eve was related to the theory of “enveloped cognition”; This suggests that our clothing choices influence our mental processes, emotions and behaviors. Researchers at Northwestern University coined the term when they found that people who wore white medical coats completed tasks with more concentration and associated their wardrobe with increased alertness.

Although there is no set of rules that defines the meaning of the colors with certainty, there are some generally accepted meanings:

Green

If you hope to attract more wealth and money in 2025, according to superstition, green underwear is the best choice for wealth.

Red

Wear red if you hope to find a romantic partner in the new year or want to recommit yourself to passion and vitality.

Pink

It makes sense that pink’s contribution to underwear superstition also has to do with love – but the color represents new, budding love. Wear pink if you’re looking for cute interactions with friends and dates.

Blue

If you’re just hoping to get through 2025 with your health, blue is the color for you. Wear blue for well-being, stability and calm.

Black

Black may not be an intuitive lucky color, but it can be a powerful hue to wear if you hope to regain some control over your life in 2025. Black can symbolize letting go of what is not for you and regaining agency.

White

Just as white doves represent peace, underwear in this color represents peace and harmony in the new year – good preparation for a new beginning.

Other New Year’s superstitions you may not know about

While the underwear superstition may sound a bit far-fetched, it’s certainly not the only one that’s taken seriously.

In Spain and Latin America, many people eat exactly twelve grapes at midnight to consolidate their good fortune for the New Year. In other cultures, cleaning and laundry are discouraged on New Year’s Day for fear of “washing away” good fortune.

In the United States, people in the South eat kale and black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day to invite prosperity; The beans themselves represent coins, while the green symbolizes money – similar color symbolism to underwear superstition.

As we all hope for a healthy and prosperous 2025, there seem to be plenty of cultural and online superstitions to help us cover our bases.
