Are you dreaming of a white Christmas in Oklahoma with Bing Crosby singing in your ear?

Despite the headaches that an icy or snowy Christmas can bring to a holiday trip, there is still something special about waking up to presents on Christmas morning and seeing a winter wonderland outside.

While it’s too early to make a specific forecast, USA TODAY meteorologists say the ongoing wintry pattern bodes well for a snowy holiday for some people.

However, based on historical data, Oklahomans may not be so lucky.

What is a white Christmas?

The National Weather Service defines a white Christmas as one inch of snow on the ground on the morning of December 25th. It doesn’t have to snow on Christmas Day.

America’s fascination with white Christmas dates back to 1942, when Crosby first sang the wistful song in the film “Holiday Inn.”

Written by Irving Berlin, the song’s lyrics evoke a romanticized image of Christmases past, “just like the ones I used to know.” A second film – “White Christmas”, also starring Crosby – was released in 1954.

Contrary to Crosby’s wishes, only 25% to 30% of the 48 contiguous states typically have snow cover on Christmas, according to AccuWeather.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, the historical chance of having at least an inch of snow on the ground in most of Oklahoma is less than 10%. In the Panhandle, the chances are now between 10 and 25%.

According to NOAA, “While the map shows the climatological probability of snow on the ground on December 25, actual conditions this year may differ greatly from these probabilities because existing weather patterns determine whether there is snow on the ground or whether it will snow .” Autumn on Christmas Day.

“These probabilities are only useful as a guide to show where snow on the ground is more likely,” NOAA said.

Forecasters will have a better idea of the likelihood of a white Christmas as the holiday approaches because accurate predictions can only be made about seven days in advance, the National Weather Service said.

History of White Christmas in Oklahoma

Now that we know that Oklahoma’s chances of having a white Christmas are pretty slim, let’s take a look at the history of a white Christmas in Oklahoma City.

Since 1913, OKC has only had a total of twelve snowfalls on Christmas morning. And only six of those years saw at least an inch of snow. There have now been 11 years in which snow actually fell on Christmas Day.

The most significant white Christmas is also one of the most recent: In 2009, Oklahoma City had 14 inches of snow on the ground on Christmas morning after snow fell in a record-breaking blizzard on Christmas Eve.
