It’s the question on every Liverpool fan’s lips in the last few hours: Will tonight’s game against Manchester United take place?

Heavy snowfall overnight in north-west England has thrown the game into doubt but – at least for now – the game is still scheduled to go ahead.

Liverpool City Council’s Safety Advisory Group held a meeting on Sunday morning, but no final decision was made; The group is expected to meet again around lunchtime UK time to make a final decision on whether the game can go ahead safely.

A statement from Liverpool Football Club released on Sunday morning said: “A safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions for today’s game against Manchester United at Anfield. At this point in time the plan is for the game to go ahead as normal and with full force.” There will be a further safety meeting at midday to assess the current conditions. We will inform fans as soon as possible.

The playing surface at Anfield will not be a problem; It is the conditions outside the stadium and the safety of the fans that will ultimately decide whether today’s game goes ahead.

On Sunday morning, workers outside the ground were photographed shoveling snow to ensure the area outside the ground was safe for fans to access.

Elsewhere in the region, Liverpool John Lennon Airport’s runway was closed for several hours on Sunday morning, but reopened at 10:15 a.m. GMT as conditions improved.

The weather on Merseyside is forecast to improve throughout the day, but the question is whether conditions will improve enough and in time for the 16:30 GMT kick-off to go ahead as planned.
