Will Nashville have a white Christmas? What weather forecasts say

Only light snow continues to fall in Nashville and surrounding areas.

According to National Weather Service reports, less than an inch of snow fell in Music City on Tuesday, December 3rd. Northwest Middle Tennessee counties saw light snowfall Wednesday, with Smith and Cannon counties reporting less than an inch of snowfall.

Will Nashville have a white Christmas in 2024? What forecasters say

It’s unlikely it will snow in Nashville on Christmas Day.

In order for snow to fall, certain weather conditions must be present. According to NASA’s National Snow and Ice Data Center, snowfall depends on the moisture in the atmosphere as well as the right temperatures.

Snow forms when the air temperature is at or below freezing (32 F). If the ground temperature is at or below freezing, the snow ends up on the ground. In general, snow will not form if the ground temperature is at least 41 degrees Celsius, the center reported.

According to the National Weather Service, Tennessee will experience above-average temperatures year-round, as previously predicted by the Climate Prediction Center. Between December 14th and 27th, temperatures are expected to be 55 to 60% above average. In December, Nashville has an average high of 52 and average low of 33.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac doesn’t foresee a white Christmas for Tennessee either.

According to the 2024 Christmas forecast, snow will primarily fall in the central region of the United States, while the rest of the country will experience a “milder, milder winter than average.”

“Don’t expect high odds in the Plains, Mid-Atlantic, South, Texas-Oklahoma, Missouri, or western and central Tennessee,” wrote the Old Farmer’s Almanac. “We’re talking about very slim chances (maybe 20%).”

Previous White Christmases in Nashville

The last time Nashville had a white Christmas was in 2010. Ten years later, Music City saw only traces of snow in 2020. These are the years Nashville experienced a measurable white Christmas, according to the weather service.
