Will there be a second season of “1923”? The Yellowstone prequel is coming soon

Paramount+ is expanding the world of Taylor Sheridan’s Dutton Family universe with the second season of “1923,” arriving in just two months.

The prequel show follows a generation of the Dutton family saga and is the second “Yellowstone” prequel following the events of the limited series “1883” (released in 2021). This series follows a “new generation of Duttons, led by patriarch Jacob and matriarch Cara,” played by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, according to Paramount+.

“The series explores the early 20th century, as pandemics, historic droughts and the end of Prohibition plague the Mountain West and the Duttons who call it home,” the series synopsis reads.

The Duttons are ancestors of current Yellowstone ranch owner John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner).

“1923,” which originally premiered on December 18, 2022, was “the most-watched Paramount+ premiere ever in the U.S., drawing 7.4 million total viewers across Paramount+ and linear previews,” the network said in the February press release 2023. The addition of the episode is “the biggest series premiere on cable for 2022.”

Will there be a season 2 of “1923”?

Yes. Paramount+ announced in February 2023 that the “record-breaking drama series” would return for a second season.

The second season premieres on Sunday, February 23, 2025.

Filming for the series took place in Austin, Texas, NBC Montana reported in September, before moving to Butte, Montana. Brandon Sklenar, who plays Spencer Dutton in the series, posted a series of photos in an Instagram post last month with the caption “Butte is best,” suggesting he may have filmed there for “1923.”

“1923” Season 2 is “really the second half of the season”

Season 1 ended with a lot that still needed to be answered, and co-creator Sheridan said in a December 2022 interview with Deadline that Season 2 was “really the second half of the season,” adding he had no idea which one Direction the season would take would take time when he started working on it.

“This one is different than ‘1883,’ where I had the whole thing in my head,” Sheridan told Deadline. “This time I had no idea what to do. I just went on a journey myself.”
