Will Winter Storm Cora impact Florida? Yes, that's how it works

Florida won’t get a break from subfreezing temperatures any time soon, as AccuWeather forecasters warn of a second major winter storm that has the potential to cause damaging freezes along the central Gulf Coast and Florida Peninsula between Thursday and Sunday.

The brunt of the storm, now called Winter Storm Cora by The Weather Channel, will be felt along an 800-mile stretch between North Texas and western Tennessee and Kentucky, where an estimated 3 to 6 inches of snow could fall. The storm is likely to produce ice impacts in these areas, as well as northern Louisiana, northeast Georgia, South Carolina and western North Carolina.

In the hardest-hit areas, millions of people are likely to be affected by power outages, dangerous road conditions and possible flight cancellations. However, AccuWeather’s chief on-air meteorologist Bernie Rayno says it won’t be an exact repeat of the first storm.

“This will not be a repeat of the major ice storm over the Southern Plains last weekend,” Rayno said. “However, the impacts of this storm will reach even further south. A little ice can cause massive problems in southern cities and towns.”

Winter Storm Cora will bring cold rain to the Florida Panhandle, Tallahassee and Jacksonville

If subfreezing temperatures weren’t bad enough, cold rains will hit areas along the Interstate 10 corridor stretching from Houston, Texas, through Jacksonville, including the Florida Panhandle and Tallahassee, according to AccuWeather meteorologists.

Depending on how east the storm moves, it could shift further south, causing icy and wintry conditions in northern parts of Florida. A south piste could provide just the right conditions for some snow. However, the storm is currently expected to bring mostly rain.

Florida will see more freezing temperatures

While the first winter storm has already brought extremely cold temperatures to northern and central Florida, the arctic air from this second storm will seep even further south.

The northern Gulf Coast areas of Florida and the northern East Coast have a moderate chance of freezing temperatures this week, while the inland areas of North Florida have a high chance. The chances are lower in Central Florida near Tampa and Orlando, while South Florida is not expected to feel any of these impacts.

The storm raises the possibility of a possible freeze on the Florida Peninsula, which could damage some of the state’s citrus crops, according to AccuWeather.

How long will the cold weather from Winter Storm Cora last?

AccuWeather originally predicted that the central and eastern U.S. would experience temperatures 12 to 25 degrees below typical average through Jan. 12. This forecast has now been slightly extended until mid-January.
