Winter storm warning for blowing snow and bitter cold late Wednesday

After a brief respite from wintry weather, snow and cold will spread across Michigan late Wednesday.

A WINTER STORM WARNING has been issued for Berrien, Cass and St. Joseph counties in Michigan and St. Joseph (eastern), Elkhart and LaGrange counties in Indiana from 5:00 p.m. Wednesday to 1:00 a.m. Friday.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for LaPorte, St. Joseph (Western), Kosciusko and Marshall Counties in Indiana from 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through 1:00 a.m. Eastern Time Friday.

Wednesday starts dry, but cold and windy. A system is expected to roll through this evening, bringing another chance for snow.

Around 4 p.m. it starts to snow lightly, then it gets heavier and overnight it snows like a lake. Approximately 1-3″ is possible Wednesday evening.

Lake effect snow will continue into Friday morning and is expected to dump another 2 to 4 inches Thursday into Friday.

Higher snowfall amounts are expected in southwest Michigan. Communities further south will not receive as much snow.

Winds will also increase Wednesday evening, with gusts around 45 mph in places. This will likely result in blowing and drifting snow, making driving difficult at times.

Not only will we have to deal with the snow, it will also be bitterly cold! Wind chill values are expected to feel as low as -10°C on Thursday and Friday.

The cold won’t last forever – maximum temperatures will rise to almost 40°C by Sunday. At the beginning of next week it will be so warm that it will probably rain instead of snow!
