Metro Atlanta is facing dangerous conditions due to a winter storm warning as freezing rain and sleet make travel dangerous Friday morning.

ATLANTA – A strong winter storm is bringing snow, sleet and freezing rain to the Atlanta metropolitan area and northern Georgia. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the region that is in effect until 7 a.m. Saturday.

Hazardous conditions are expected to impact travel and potentially lead to power outages.

  • Friday: Wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain; dangerous travel. Maximum temperature: 35°F.
  • Friday evening: The wintry mix tapers to a patchy, freezing drizzle. Low: 30°F.
  • Saturday: Mostly cloudy, thunderstorms possible; airy. Maximum temperature: 37°F.
  • Sunday: Bitterly cold morning in the teens to low 20s; sunny afternoon. Maximum temperature: 39°F.

Snowfall will begin before sunrise in far western Georgia and move east. I-20 is expected to separate the snowfall from a wintry mix. Greater Atlanta will see a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain, reducing total snowfall but increasing ice conditions.

  • Far North Georgia: 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected, with ice accumulation up to 0.2 inches.
  • North Metro Atlanta to I-20 Corridor: 0.5-2 inches of snow and sleet, followed by up to 3 inches of ice.
  • South of I-20: Minimal snowfall (less than 1 inch) with up to 0.2 inches of freezing rain changing to rain in the afternoon.
  • Icy roads: Icy rain makes driving dangerous, especially during the morning commute.
  • Power outages: Ice buildup on trees and power lines could cause outages, especially with gusty winds Saturday.
  • Extreme cold: Temperatures will drop below 20°C on Sunday morning, highlighting the need for preparation.
