Winter Storm Warning now in effect for Northern GA – WSB-TV Channel 2

ATLANTA – As a winter storm approaches north Georgia, the Winter Storm Warning issued Wednesday has been updated.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Ashley Kramlich says north Georgia and most of metro Atlanta are now under a winter storm warning or winter weather advisory.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Banks, Barrow, Butts Carroll, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cherokee, Clarke, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, Dade, DeKalb, Douglas, Dawson, Elbert Fannin, Fayette, Floyd, Forsyth, Franklin, Fulton. Gilmer, Gordon, Greene, Gwinnett, Hall, Haralson, Hart, Heard, Henry, Jackson, Jasper, Lumpkin, Madison, Morgan, Murray, Newton, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, Putnam, Rockdale, Stephens, Spalding counties , Taliaferro, Towns, Union, Walton, Walker, Whitfield, White and Wilkes.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Meriwether, Lamar, Pike, Troup and Upson counties.

Kramlich says all types of frozen precipitation will be likely. It will initially snow and then change to a wintry mix in metro Atlanta and areas south of I-20. Untreated roads will no longer be passable from late Friday morning.

What you should know

  • Snow and a winter mix will occur between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. Friday
  • It will snow until tomorrow morning, occasionally mixing with sleet or freezing rain
  • Gradually more freezing rain, sleet and rain mix in from south to north into the afternoon
  • There will be frequent snowfalls of 1 to 2 inches around I-20, with 0.1 to 0.25 inches of ice possible
  • Further north in the mountains of North Georgia, 3 to 6 inches of snow is possible, with locally higher amounts possible
  • Difficult to impossible journey on Friday
  • The winter mix will end early Saturday morning, but much of what falls will persist into Sunday morning
