Winter Storm Watches for Jefferson, Lewis Counties

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) – There is a risk of heavy, lake-effect snow across parts of the North Country this weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Jefferson, Lewis and Oswego counties from Friday afternoon through Monday morning.

With many people traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday, narrow bands of heavy lake snow could result in rapidly changing road conditions and visibility, according to the NWS.

According to the weather service, there is “significant uncertainty” about exactly where these snow bands will be and how much snow will fall. 7NEWS’ John Kubis agrees and says it’s still too early to know how the winds will blow and take this snow. (He’ll be briefing us on the 6 o’clock news tonight.)

The NWS issued winter storm warnings for other areas of the state this weekend, including western and central New York.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Tuesday urged New Yorkers to remain vigilant, keep an eye on the weather forecast and use caution when traveling.

“We are preparing to deploy additional snow removal equipment and personnel, as well as supply personnel, and have placed the National Guard on standby. If you travel, please plan in advance and prioritize your safety and the safety of others to ensure we can all enjoy this holiday safely and warmly with our loved ones,” she said in a prepared statement.
