For the southern half of Lower Michigan, the winter weather advisory includes the scariest word in winter travel – freezing rain. Currently, as of 9:30 a.m., all data suggests that the freezing rain period will be very light. Ice accumulations should be between one trace and five hundredths of an inch. It’s definitely a weather situation when you look at the hood of your car while driving. There could be light freezing rain or freezing drizzle. The road surface is cold and below freezing. Any rain will freeze on the streets.

Precipitation will now increase into the early afternoon. If there is a slippery period across the southern half of Lower, it would occur this afternoon and evening.

Here is the radar forecast from 10am today through tonight. You will notice some extent of snow and light freezing rain this afternoon. The mixed precipitation will then transition to light snow this evening, ending over the southern Lower late this evening.

Southwest Lower Michigan will see little snow accumulation. The winter weather warning runs until 7 p.m. far to the south and until 11 p.m., but you can expect the warning to be lifted sooner when the precipitation is mostly over by early afternoon.

Southeast Lower Michigan will see precipitation into the evening hours. It will probably take a little longer to reach your destination.

Northern Lower will have snow covered roads throughout the afternoon and evening. Temperatures don’t drop after the snow, which is usually the case this time of year. At temperatures around 30 degrees, road salt can work well.

Tomorrow looks dry, with temperatures rising above freezing.

If you’re driving to your Christmas destination, it’s fine now until early afternoon, and late Tuesday morning or afternoon should be much safer.
