Winter Weather Advisory: Southeast Michigan awakens to a snowy morning with stormy conditions

Commuters should plan ahead and expect their commute to work to take longer than usual due to a band of snow that continues to dump snowflakes across southeast Michigan.

The National Weather Service ordered the first winter weather advisory of the season for the Detroit metropolitan area Thursday morning, with Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw counties all on alert.

More snow is expected through mid-morning, with the majority falling between 8 and 9 a.m. Thursday.

Where does it snow?

The primary source of snow is a system running along the I-96/I-696 corridor and portions of I-94 and I-75.

The communities that will be hardest hit include those along the county lines between Wayne and Macomb and Oakland.

Some areas are expected to see up to an inch of snowfall per hour during the most intense periods.

Most communities will see between 3 and 5 inches of snow.

School closures apply to dozens of communities. You can find the list here.

Cold temperatures and windy conditions

There will also be loss of visibility on the roads, making it even more important to drive slowly until it starts to melt – which isn’t expected until this weekend.

Highs on Thursday will be around 21 degrees, with a chilly wind making it feel even colder.

According to the NWS, wind gusts reached speeds of up to 35 miles per hour.

All of this leads to slippery roads, especially on bridges and overpasses.
