Winter weather event today through this evening

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – A weather system will arrive in the Panhandle today, bringing snow accumulations to much of the area.

As of 6 a.m., snow had already started falling along and south of I-40, including in Amarillo.

It will continue to snow as the morning progresses. If this is the case, the heaviest bands of snow are likely to form during the afternoon.

Only light snow is likely in the northwest portion of our area, but a winter weather advisory has been issued for the rest of our area, including Amarillo, where 2 to 4 inches of snow may accumulate by evening. Where the heavier snow bands form, there may also be higher amounts of snow locally.

Travel could become dangerous from Thursday afternoon as there may be snow-covered roads and it may freeze over again tomorrow evening, adding to the danger as surfaces are icy.

Residents are strongly advised to plan accordingly and stay informed if conditions worsen over the next 24 hours.

Roads will likely remain icy through Friday morning until temperatures rise above freezing later in the day. Later in the day wind temperatures will be 15 to 20 degrees.
