Winter weather warnings issued, Alaska braces for freezing rain and blowing snow

A low pressure system is expected to bring heavy snow, freezing rain and difficult travel conditions across Alaska beginning Tuesday, December 3, 2024, resulting in the issuance of multiple winter weather advisories.

Winter weather warnings have been issued for an emerging low pressure system that will hit Alaska starting Tuesday.

15-25 cm (6-10 inches) of snow is expected over Thompson Pass through Tuesday. Winds of up to 72 km/h (45 mph) coupled with blowing snow will complicate travel conditions as visibility drops to 800 m (0.5 miles) or less.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the area from 12:00 p.m. LT Tuesday through 12:00 a.m. LT Wednesday, December 4.

Freezing rain and trace amounts of snow are expected over the Susitna Valley, Anchorage and the western Kenai Peninsula over the next few days.

The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Susitna Valley from 3:00 p.m. LT Tuesday through 3:00 a.m. LT Thursday, December 5. For Anchorage, the advisory remains in effect from 6:00 a.m. LT Tuesday until 3:00 a.m. LT on Wednesday, December 4.
